Thanks to all the donors and alumni who joined us on campus this past Sunday! We were so grateful to be able to highlight achievements of our education students, foster meaningful relationships with faculty, and share exciting developments happening in our department. WLC’s School of Education has an advisory council made up of area teachers and administrators along with our faculty and student teachers. Once a year we ask an area educator to address the group on a significant issue in the field of education. Earlier this week, Dr. Ron Russ, superintendent of the Merton School District, provided our group with a presentation on the topic, Schools in an Age of Teacher Shortages. Our group benefited greatly from his thoughtful insights and practical perspective.

Garrett Manderville, a member of the leadership team at St. Marcus Lutheran and principal of North Avenue Middle School, addressed students in Portfolio Seminar this week. His focus on the ongoing need for exceptional educators—especially within high-performing urban schools such as St. Marcus—was both timely and appreciated.

Our EDU 327 Teaching Science students had an incredible field trip experience at Deer Creek Intermediate, where they had the opportunity to learn firsthand about innovative STEM education in action. A huge thank you to Mr. Peter Graven for welcoming our students and sharing the exciting opportunities available to learners in his program!

Students were inspired by the engaging STEM initiatives taking place and gained valuable insights into how to build their own personal learning networks. Mr. Graven also offered practical advice on finding resources and exploring third-source funding opportunities—tools that will be invaluable as our future educators begin shaping their own classrooms.

We are so grateful for this meaningful partnership and the chance for our students to see excellent teaching and learning in action. Thank you, Mr. Graven, for the outstanding work you’re doing to empower students every day!

EDU 354: Gifted Learner students ventured to Golda Meir School in Milwaukee to see in action their Schoolwide Enrichment Model. Students have studied this model of gifted programming as well as other models and it was enlightening to see the model in action.

FTEA was honored to welcome alumni teachers Mrs. Emily Wagner, Mrs. Hilary Szukalski, Mr. Corbin Biersack, and Mrs. Kaylee Kramer for Alumni Night at WLC on February 26th. The event saw a strong turnout of education majors eager to learn from experienced professionals currently working in the field. Our guests thoughtfully answered a wide range of questions and shared meaningful advice to encourage and guide future educators.

The purpose of this annual event is to connect alumni with current students and provide an authentic glimpse into the realities of the teaching profession. Teaching is about far more than delivering lessons—it involves being an advocate, leader, decision-maker, and role model, while also maintaining a personal identity beyond the classroom. Balancing these responsibilities can be challenging, but hearing firsthand experiences from practicing teachers offered students reassurance, perspective, and support as they continue their journey toward becoming educators.
