Refusing to settle.

At a time when men dominated the workplace, Karen Timian ’81 was fighting for a chance to be treated equally. She began her career as an inventory clerk and worked her way up to a supervisory role, but without a degree, she reached a dead end in her career. Determined to keep moving forward, she pushed for the opportunity to attend college and eventually enrolled in Alverno’s Weekend College.

That decision changed the course of her life. Alverno helped her find her voice and build the confidence to pursue leadership roles, from CEO of a small company to global IT finance controller for a much larger corporation. She credits her time at Alverno with helping shape her success.

Read more about Timian’s journey, how her experience at Alverno shaped her career and the lessons she hopes to share with younger women.

At Alverno, success is about more than a letter grade.

WUWM 89.7 FM - Milwaukee's NPR recently highlighted Alverno's 8 Abilities model, which focuses on skills like communication, analysis and developing a global perspective. Our approach to assessment encourages students to focus on continuous improvement through feedback, rather than competition.

Current music therapy student, Alisha Gilbert, shares how learning without letter grades has eased the stress of trying to earn a particular grade and allows her to focus on doing her best.

Check out the story to hear more about Alverno's no-letter grading model, how it prepares students for the real world, why experts differ on the importance of letter grades and how perfectionist students navigate schools without them.

Alverno College in Milwaukee doesn't give letter grades. Schools like MIT and University of Michigan are stopping letter grades for freshmen to ease the pressure of transitioning to college.
