For an afternoon, strategic comm students made bvk, an intergrated marketing and communication firm in Bayside, their classroom.

They spoke with account managers, went over the ex*****on plans for successful campaigns and made connections that would last well beyond the afternoon.

"It was so insightful to hear about the career path I could take from professionals who are doing it now,” said rising sophomore Amelia Lerret.

This was all part of the Diederich Experience program, an initiative meant to connect comm students with alumni. While the Diederich Experience started with trips to visit alums in other cities, it's now being supplemented with regular visits to Milwaukee-area employers too.

A series of trips to local employers show College of Comm students all the possibilities that await them in their respective fields.

Thanks so much to the Urban Ecology Center for hosting our college retreat to kick off the 2026-27 academic year. We're recharged and ready to reunite with students on Monday! See you all soon 😄

MA in Communication Studies alumna Phylix Asilevi was recently published in the Howard Journal of Communications!

Her article, "Digital Maternal Health Communication in Ghana Through a Sankofa Lens: The Case of Midwife Sally," uses a new theoretical model grounded in Afrocentric communication theory to explore how social media platforms bridge important communication gaps for expecting mothers.

When national news breaks in Milwaukee, out-of-town media visit, get their headlines, and move on to the next story.

But who stays to cover the after-effects in the local communities?

Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service, a nonprofit, hyperlocal newsroom operated out of Johnston Hall, works with students and organizational partners to do just that. The journalists at NNS tell stories of the city's underserved communities in ways that empower residents.

They recently did a 10-year retrospective on the 2016 Sherman Park uprising that covers the impact of investments into the neighborhood, what residents remember from that time, and how things have changed in the decade since.

The Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service, a nonprofit, hyperlocal news outlet, published “The Uprising in Sherman Park: 10 Years Later."

🎨 She paints patterns on driveways.
🍦 She had her own viral ice cream business.

And that’s all just for starters.

Diederich College of Comm alumna Olivia von der Lippe gained acclaim during her time as a student for putting knitted scarves on the Father Marquette statue.

Her creative drive has not slowed down since graduating in 2019; in fact, it has only produced more daring, elaborate projects year after year.

Olivia von der Lippe, a class of 2019 graduate of the Diederich College of Comm, is a renowned artist in Chicago.
