The Cardiovascular Research Center, founded in 1992 at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), is at the forefront of scientific discovery in cardiovascular health and disease, ranking in the top 10 in 2024 and the top 20 in the U.S. consistently during the last decade for federal dollars for cardiovascular research amongst medical schools. Over 32,000 square feet of space is dedicated to over 25

laboratories, housing offices, conference rooms, and equipment cores primarily located on the fourth floors of the Health Research Center and Medical Education Building. The Cardiovascular Research Center is situated in the heart of the Milwaukee Regional Medical Campus in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which provides a unique immersive academic biomedical environment for cardiovascular education, research, and the healthcare of children and adults. The Cardiovascular Research Center’s mission is to lead discovery research and accelerate the translation of scientific breakthroughs for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. By building scientific bridges to clinical practice and training the next generation of cardiovascular researchers, we seek to revolutionize cardiovascular care and enhance public health across Wisconsin. More than 180 members of the Cardiovascular Research Center enjoy access to core equipment, specialized services, informative newsletters, pilot funding opportunities, and numerous seminars, events and courses for ongoing research education and trans-departmental networking to promote collaborative biomedical research, which are described in detail in following sections. Emphasis is placed on collaborative, multidisciplinary research centered around our members’ expertise in thematic areas of research called Signature Programs, which are 1) Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis & Vascular Biology, 2) Cardiac Biology & Heart Failure, 3) Cardio-Oncology, and 4) Hypertension. The Cardiovascular Research Center is directed by Mike Widlansky, MD, MPH, Northwestern Mutual Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology and Toxicology, who has over 20 years of experience and expertise leading cardiovascular clinical, training, and research programs. The Cardiovascular Research Center is supported by its three associate directors, Mary Sorci‐Thomas, PhD (Education & Training), Ze Zheng, MBBS, PhD (Basic Science), and Julie Freed, MD, PhD (Clinical & Translational Science); three assistant directors, Allison DeVan, PhD (Education & Training), Andrew Spearman, MD (Basic Science), and William Hughes, PhD (Clinical & Translational Science); and dedicated staff. Along with its exceptional leadership, the Cardiovascular Research Center receives extensive institutional support and thrives with philanthropic gifts by the A. Keelan, Jr., MD, Cardiovascular Research Fund, Sally Bentley Endowed Cardiovascular Venture Fund for New Researchers, Rupple Fund through the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, and the Cullen Family Healthy Heart Research Program, among others. For the past decade, the Cardiovascular Research Center has stewarded over $4.3M to train the next generation of researchers through its prestigious T32 postdoctoral training grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). In the last four years, the Center has also provided more than 40 summer undergraduate research fellowships, funded by the American Heart Association (AHA) Supporting Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) and NHLBI R25, imparting training in career development and hands-on research experiences. We are pleased to welcome our newest CVRC Member, Mary Eapen, MRCPI, MS, MBBS, Professor of Medicine in the Department of Hematology & Oncology. She is also Senior Scientific Director - Research, Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research. Her research focuses on the use of graft sources other than bone marrow for allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation for acute leukemia and marrow failure disorders.

Please help us in welcoming our newest CVRC Member, Christian Kastrup, PhD, Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Trauma and Acute Care. His research focuses on the biochemistry of hemostasis, thrombosis, and fibrinolysis, and on developing RNA therapeutics and nanomedicines that modulate coagulation pathways. Cardiovascular-related work includes research on the biochemistry of fibrinogen, PAI-1, fibrinolysis, thromboinflammation, venous and arterial thrombosis, and translational therapeutics for vascular disease and trauma-associated thromboembolism.

The CVRC is happy to welcome their newest member, Anita D'Souza, MD, Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology & Oncology. Dr. D'Souza is an NIH-funded hematologist/oncologist who specializes in plasma cell disorders including diseases such as light chain amyloidosis and multiple myeloma. She has studied risk stratification, patient-reported and functional outcomes, as well as real-world outcomes in these diseases with the goal of improving early recognition, treatment selection, and long-term survivorship.

The Cardiovascular Research Center has appointed Erika Johansen, PhD, as a postdoctoral trainee to the Cardiovascular Research Center’s National Institutes of Health T32 postdoctoral training program.

Dr. Johansen earned her Bachelor of Science in biology and biomedical science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2021. She then completed her PhD in microbiology & immunology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in March of 2026 under the mentorship of Vera Tarakanova, PhD, Professor of Microbiology & Immunology.

Dr. Johansen has now joined the laboratory of John Corbett, PhD, professor of biochemistry. Dr. Corbett is also a member of the Cardiovascular Research Center’s Signature Program in Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis, & Vascular Biology.

Her project, "Mechanisms of Protective Cytokine Signaling in Pancreatic β Cells During Viral Infection and Type 1 Diabetes," challenges the long-standing belief that inflammatory cytokines primarily damage pancreatic beta cells during viral infection and contribute to the development of type 1 diabetes. Instead, her research investigates whether these immune signaling molecules serve a protective role by acting as an early warning system that helps beta cells defend themselves against viral injury.

Dr. Johansen will use a clinically relevant viral infection model to investigate how cytokine signaling and antiviral pathways protect pancreatic beta cells during infection, while also exploring whether similar protective mechanisms exist in other organs, including the heart. By uncovering how the innate immune and endocrine systems work together to preserve tissue function during infection, her research could reshape our understanding of the early events that lead to type 1 diabetes and identify new therapeutic strategies to prevent beta cell destruction and reduce the cardiovascular complications associated with the disease.

Building on excellence in cardiovascular research, the Cardiovascular Research Center’s T32 postdoctoral training program, “Training in Signature Transdisciplinary Cardiovascular Sciences,” is funded by a $2.7 million grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute that provides support for six postdoctoral training slots each year. The grant provides up to three years of training for appointed postdoctoral fellows in the Cardiovascular Research Center with an MD, PhD, PharmD, or DO degree. Complementary support for trainees is provided by a donation given to the Cardiovascular Research Center by the A. O. Smith Foundation for the A. O. Smith Fellowship Scholars Program, a program designed to support talented cardiovascular researchers and physicians to overcome the barriers that exist in launching and sustaining a successful research career.

The ultimate goal of this training program is to train the next generation of cardiovascular scientists and physicians, by incorporating broad-based, personalized, supportive, and rigorous training opportunities.

Dr. Johansen joins six other distinguished A.O. Smith Scholars in the Cardiovascular Research Center’s T32 postdoctoral training program: Adam Knier, PhD, Alexis Smith, PhD, Taylor Holmes, DPT, PhD, Justin Womack, PhD, MS, Md Mostafijur Rahman, PhD, MS, and Hannah Cizauskas, PhD. The program is currently accepting applications from highly qualified candidates. Since its inception in 2017, alumni of the program have been highly successful in publishing in high-impact journals, obtaining K and F awards, and securing faculty positions, building toward independence as cardiovascular investigators and physicians.

The program is co-directed by Mary Sorci-Thomas, PhD, professor of medicine and associate director of the Cardiovascular Research Center, Jacquelyn Kulinski, MD, professor of medicine, and Justin Grobe, PhD, of physiology and biomedical engineering, Butenhoff Family Professor of Cardiovascular Research at MCW.

Join us in welcoming our newest member to the CVRC, Aasim Padela, MD, MSc, Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Padela's research spans the broad intersections of community health, religion and bioethics with a specific focus on using the lens of Muslim experiences in healthcare to address health inequities using discursive, educational and policy interventions. Against this backdrop, his community-engaged research work addressing religion-related barriers to healthy behaviors is most related to cardiovascular disease as they deploy religiously-tailored and ethically-balanced interventions to support preventive health actions.
