Yesterday, Chef Gustavo Romero joined Michelle Hamilton's SPAN 3506 - Traditional Ways of Knowing & the Environment to discuss the history and importance of corn and nixtamalization as part of traditional ways of knowing in the Spanish-speaking world. 🌽🔥 Students learned about the deep cultural connections between food, history, and identity—an essential part of understanding traditions that have shaped communities for centuries.

Thank you, Chef Romero, for sharing your expertise and passion with our students! 🙌

🌎✈️ Make Study Abroad Possible for More Students!

For students like Martha Denton, studying abroad is a transformative experience. But with the rising cost of travel and other financial pressures, this opportunity remains out of reach for many of our highest-achieving students.

That’s why we’ve set an ambitious goal to raise $5,000 to support an additional student’s study abroad journey in the coming year. With the encouragement of alumni who recognize the importance of making study abroad accessible, we’re excited to make this dream a reality.

Will you join us? Your tax-deductible donation, big or small, can make a world of difference. 🌟🌍

Join us Thursday, Apr 25 for "Pagan Spain (1957) in Spanish: Censorship, Plagiarism and Retranslation of African American author Richard Wright" presented by Daniel Linder from the Universidad de Salamanca. z.umn.edu/sppt-events
--
Wright travelled from his expatriate home in Paris to Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, and Madrid, among other destinations, and Pagan Spain (1957) is his provocative account of his travels. The novel has been translated into Spanish three times (1970, 1989 and 2022), but these texts have been largely ignored, even by scholars of translation.
