Yesterday the Interfaith Institute welcomed 12 new Interfaith Scholars! This one year leadership course in ethics and practices of care is taught by our Executive Director, Prof Najeeba Syeed.
We spent our first class on a tour of sacred sites in Cedar Riverside led by Jenean Gilmer.
We learned about the history and current of interfaith cooperation in this incredibly diverse neighborhood, with the largest Somali American population in the country.
We learned about local groups doing youth led work by Augsburg alumni like Coach Jen Weber, and Christian leaders like Pastor Jane Bucklee Farley who have been cooperating with Imam Sharif and other imams on social services for all in the area
We then heard from Rabbi Heather Miller after the tour, and studied text and other related teachings for High Holy Days, especially focusing on care for communities.
We’re so proud of these Muslim, Jewish, Christian, humanist, Indigenous student leaders for coming together to learn about each othwr and care for our larger communities!

We love interfaith friendships at the Interfaith Institute. Prof Syeed and Rev. Babette Chatman have been sharing the stage for years at Augsburg and in the community. We love to see Muslim and Christian women, and people of all faith and belief traditions collaborate!
Today they did the opening blessing for the *biggest and most religiously diverse* incoming class yet!
After Pastor Babette opened, our executive director Prof Syeed offered these words:

“Indeed, with hardship comes ease” is found in Surah Ash-Sharh (94:5-6) Quran (Recite in Arabic)

In this moment, today, as we gather to begin a new year of university, I look across this hall and see your beautiful faces.
I am reminded that many may be showing up today with a hardship, with a burden, with an unfulfilled promise.

God promises us that in these kernels of complexity and difficulty there is a grain of hope, and some day a moment of unburdening and ease.

How do we get to that place of collective calm one day?
We do it by showing up like you did today, together. By holding each other up when someone else falls. By asking for help when we need it, to have the humility to know not every day can any of us be perfect. By learning new ways of being and new people who make our lives richer in the practices of care and hope.
We come to that place of promised calm by building community, talking to that person we never imagined we would by small smiles and hellos to one another.

I greet you with peace, Salam and Shalom and a promise today is not forever. The calm will come, and we will struggle together. In the Augsburg way holding on to the belief that there is a better world we are co creating now in small ways where all are loved, safe, alive and flourishing “

Two Augsburg University
professors kick off our campus series on Living Stories, talking about how their lives are formed by their sacred comittments. And we’re so excited to hear from Professors Syeed and Sheinfeld as they share their own stories from Muslim and Jewish traditions, and talk about how they weave together a sacred friendship.
This semester and next we will have more campus and community colleagues join us from various traditions! You won’t want to miss these dynamic gatherings and come share you own story!

We can’t wait to kick off university
Interfaith Scholars 2026-27 course and cohort Ethics and Practices of Care next week! (Pic from two years ago)
As we do every year, students start class with a walking tour of sacred sites of Cedar Riverside, we welcome back Jenean Gilmer whose been doing the tour for us for three years straight.
Second we welcome Rabbi Heather Miller who will speak to the scholars about care and the upcoming High Holy Days.
This semester students will hear from elected officials, community leaders, imams, pastors, rabbis, clergy from Buddhist and Hindu traditions, humanists, leaders from business and health care sectors and visit Central Lutheran to learn how they care for our unhoused neighbors.
All learning about how we care for ourselves and one another!

Our director, managing director and whole team is on their way to Chicagoway to Interfaith America leadership summit, our director is co leading five sessions on campus pluralism and a BRAID mentor and we are bringing 8 teams from campuses around the Midwest who are in our Emblem program to the summit this year, good luck to our whole team who will be managing an event for those eight partner schools !

We are very excited to be bringing teams from these universities to Leadership Summit this year and to celebrate the achievements of our Emblem student and faculty/staff fellows at a gathering in Chicago.
Thousands of students were impacted by their campus pluralism work (more campuses engaged in the program, these are the eight joining the summit)! Thank you to The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations and the President’s Office of Augsburg University for making this possible. university

Our director Prof Najeeba Syeed will be co-leading five sessions with Dr Melissa Carter, on the topic “Campus Culture Starts with Me: Systems and Structures to Hold the Complexities of Pluralism” for the 2026 Interfaith America Leadership Summit in Chicago next week.
Prof Syeed and Carter have worked together in the past and we love to see Muslim and Jewish women (and people of all faiths and humanistic traditions) professional academics bring their life experiences to campus pluralism!
