Hey MCAD Students, Join Allan Kohl for Adventures in the Archives!

✨ Tuesday, September 8 at 12:05 pm
✨ Main Building, Auditorium 140
✨ Student event

This lunchtime talk celebrates the 140th anniversary of the very first class offered on September 7, 1886 by the then-brand new Minneapolis School of Fine Arts, which today is our own Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

Featuring historic photographs from the College Archives, this presentation shows what classes students took, what skills they were expected to develop, and what challenges they had to overcome in becoming artists.

You’ll also meet some of the fascinating individuals who shaped the School’s identity during its first forty years, and see how the School adapted and changed to face crises that could have resulted in its demise.

"Living Threads" by Hend Al-Mansour ’02, MFA uses screen printing to highlight the story of Palestinian American poet and Deaf Educator, Yara Omer. Al-Mansour combines Islamic design motifs, American Sign Language (ASL), and traditional Palestinian dress to highlight the intersectionality of her Palestinian American identity.

An early draft of the work was on view at the Minneapolis Institute of Art as in her "Mihrabs: Portraits of Arab American Women" exhibition as part of the Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program.

Throwback Thursday to when Raina Belleau ’11 created a 500-pound, 17-foot sculpture made entirely of trash for the Minnesota State Fair.

The artwork was part of the Department of Natural Resources "Adopt-a-River" program. Each scrap used to form this sculpture was cleaned up out of a river.

"You have no idea how much trash is out there until you start picking it up yourself." —Belleau

Hend Al-Mansour ’02, MFA
This year, we honored Hend Al-Mansour ’02, MFA with the Alumni Achievement Award at spring commencement. She has received the Minnesota State Arts Board’s Creative Support and Artist Initiative grants, the McKnight Fellowship, the Jerome Fellowship in Printmaking, and the Juror’s Award at the Contemporary Islamic Art exhibition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Her practice includes screen-printed works with stylized figures, Arabic calligraphy, Sadu and henna motifs, animation, and shrine-like, textile installations that merge contemporary Islamic art with feminist storytelling.

Doug Vanornum ’93
“MCAD opened my mind to another world of possibilities. Through my experiences there, I learned as much about myself as anything. I left with new skillsets, a broader perspective, and more confidence...Today, our society needs educational sanctuaries more than ever,” says Vanornum, who since 2005 has been giving generously to the MCAD Fund and Scholarships. He states, “My hope is that the school will long continue to be for others what it was for so many of us. MCAD is a special place.”

🎨 This annual publication celebrates the creative achievements and cultural leadership of MCAD alumni. Inside, you will discover innovative work being done by peers as well as current students, the latest developments at the college, and ways to engage with the MCAD community.
