We remember Gloria Steinem (1934–2026), a leading voice of the women's rights movement who visited Minnesota in 2020 as a Distinguished Carlson Lecturer at the Humphrey School.

Presented with support from Carlson and the Carlson Family Foundation, she spoke to a full Northrop Auditorium in conversation with Minnesota Public Radio's Kerri Miller, joining generations of global leaders who have engaged Minnesotans in civic dialogue.

"I think I've learned more in the last two years than I had in my four years of undergrad," says Aysia Dukes of her time in the Humphrey School's Master of Public Policy program.

Before the Humphrey School, she had spent her career working with youth at risk of entering the juvenile justice system, first as a case manager, then as a program director overseeing nearly 20 staff.

In case management, helping one person often meant starting over with the next. Now Dukes is thinking about change on a larger scale: "I would rather make some sort of change that can impact five, ten, ... 20 or 100 people."

On Minnesota's Iron Range, the community and the landscape surrounding it are deeply intertwined. The region includes forests, lakes, and mining towns that shape daily life and the values of the people who call it home.

For Carson Becicka, growing up in this community made him want to protect it. That drive led him to the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, where he's pursuing a Master of Science in Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy. Spending time outdoors fishing, skiing, and exploring helped shape his connection to the natural world.

"I think building a relationship with this place as a kid has made me want to look out for it, and the natural world more broadly," he says.

We were honored to welcome Sanda Ojiambo (MA '97), CEO and Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, to the Humphrey School for the 7th World Conference on Remedies to Racial and Ethnic Economic Inequality, hosted by the Roy Wilkins Center for Human Relations and Social Justice.

Thirty years after the first conference met in Minneapolis, the 7th World Conference returned home this August, bringing scholars, policymakers, and community leaders together from the Twin Cities and around the world.

Join us in celebrating this year’s Public Leadership Award recipients on September 17: Hubert H. (Skip) Humphrey III, a lifelong champion for public health, consumer protection, and older Minnesotans; Norman Ornstein, a nationally recognized political scientist and Minnesota native; and the Carter Family, whose generations of public service are rooted in St. Paul’s Rondo neighborhood.

This year, we will also present the Civic Spirit of Minnesota recognition, honoring Minnesotans who showed up for their neighbors when it mattered most and demonstrated the compassion, courage, and collective leadership that define our state.

Since 2003, the Public Leadership Awards have raised more than $2 million for Humphrey School student scholarships.
