The Hubert H Humphrey Fellowship Program at the UMN Humphrey School The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program provides ten months of non-degree academic study and related professional experiences in the United States.

The Humphrey Program fosters a mutual exchange of knowledge and understanding about issues of common concern in the United States and other countries around the world. Humphrey Fellows are selected based on their potential for leadership and their commitment to public service in either the public or the private sector. The Program offers Fellows valuable opportunities for leadership development and professional engagement with Americans and their counterparts from many nations. More than 4,000 men and women have been honored as Humphrey Fellows since the program began in 1978. Approximately 200 Fellowships are awarded annually. Eighteen major universities in the United States host Humphrey Fellows. Twenty nine years after his Humphrey Fellowship, Mr. Rizine Robert Mzikamanda, Chief Justice of Malawi, returned to the Humphrey School; a powerful full-circle moment.

Through his reflections on justice for all and public service reform, he shared a vision of leadership grounded in integrity, accessibility, and responsibility.

Over the past year, they have brought diverse perspectives, professional expertise, and a shared commitment to public service engaging in meaningful dialogue, collaborative learning, and cross-cultural exchange.

Leah Mwagomba, a current Hubert H Humphrey Fellow, recently participated in the Community College Residency Program at the University of South Carolina Union.

Reflecting on the experience, Leah shared:
“It was an enriching experience that I enjoyed so much. While strengthening my cross-cultural communication and leadership skills, I was able to recognize how global perspectives, such as my work in governance and anti-corruption, can meaningfully contribute to institutional dialogue and practice.”
Leah is a Senior Investigations Officer at the Malawi Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).

This fall semester was marked by meaningful dialogue, thoughtful reflection, and rich learning experiences. 💬 We are deeply grateful for the distinguished guests and experts who joined us to share their insights and engage with our Fellows!

From Christopher Preble of the discussing global security, to Humphrey alumni Kwezi Tabaro and David Perez offering reflections on their Fellowship experience, our Fellows benefited from perspectives grounded in both research and lived experience. We are grateful for Tom Hanson’s overview of the state of foreign policy, Luis Moreno’s session on leadership and emotional intelligence, and Master of Development Practice alum Nfamara Dampha’s discussion on global climate change and national COP engagement. Seminars on LinkedIn networking, storytelling, and public speaking further supported our Fellows’ professional growth and global leadership development. 🌍✨

Thank you to each of our speakers for generously sharing your time, expertise, and wisdom. This semester was one of true enrichment and growth!

Last month, our Humphrey Fellows had the opportunity to volunteer with helping sort books that will be shipped to libraries, schools, and communities across the African continent. This hands-on experience offered a meaningful way to support global access to education while engaging in service alongside an incredible local partner!📚🌍

We are grateful to be part of the impactful and inspiring work Books For Africa continues to lead and thankful to for highlighting this moment of community engagement and global impact!
