Hello, September: It’s Time for a Career Reset

A new month is a chance to pause, refocus, and decide what you want to accomplish next.

You don’t need to completely reinvent your career this September. Start with one intentional goal.

Maybe this is the month you:

• Update your resume with your latest accomplishments
• Refresh your LinkedIn profile
• Make a new professional connection
• Explore opportunities in a different career field
• Practice answering interview questions
• Develop a skill that could strengthen your career options
• Take the first step toward a goal you’ve been putting off

Small actions become meaningful progress when you keep showing up.

September Career Challenge: Choose one career goal today and give yourself until September 30 to accomplish it.

Write it down. Make a plan. Take the first step.

What’s your September career goal?

“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.”

-Vincent van Gogh

Your next big opportunity may begin with something small.

One application. One conversation. One new skill. One introduction. One decision to try again.

Career growth doesn’t always happen in big, noticeable moments. Often, it’s the small steps you take consistently that eventually create the change you’ve been working toward.

As you begin this week, focus less on how far you still have to go and more on the next step you can take today.

What small step will you take toward your career goals this week?

The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” — Mark Twain

Maybe Monday didn’t go exactly as planned. That doesn’t mean the week is lost.

Career growth doesn’t require a perfect schedule or a perfect start. Sometimes progress looks like updating one section of your résumé, making one new professional connection, researching one opportunity, or spending a few minutes developing a new skill.

You don’t have to wait for next Monday, next month, or the “right” time to refocus.

Start where you are. Take one step today.

What is one career goal you can make progress on before the end of this week?

Career Tip of the Week

Did you know that some of the best career opportunities begin with a conversation?

A recent Business Insider article highlights something career professionals have long emphasized: networking is still one of the most effective job search strategies. While a strong résumé is essential, meaningful connections can help open doors that online applications alone may not.

This week, challenge yourself to:
✔ Reach out to an alum.
✔ Connect with a professional on LinkedIn.
✔ Schedule an informational interview.
✔ Reconnect with someone in your network.

One conversation today could lead to your next opportunity tomorrow.

In a job market where hiring can be slow, career advisers say networking can matter more than your résumé.

Before you submit your next application, take five minutes to tailor your resume.

Ask yourself:

* Does my summary match this role?
* Have I highlighted the skills mentioned in the job posting?
* Did I include measurable accomplishments?

Small changes can make a big difference in helping employers quickly see why you’re a strong candidate.

Need help strengthening your resume? Walden’s Career Planning and Development team offers resume resources, career advising, webinars, and tools to help students prepare competitive application materials.

What is one section of your resume you plan to update this week?
