As the Labor Day holiday approaches, many are preparing to enjoy a long weekend.

In recent months, we’ve welcomed several outstanding faculty members to the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Bianca Santana de Cecco joined the CVM’s Department of Pathobiology and Population Medicine as an assistant professor in April. She graduated from Federal University of Santa Maria in Brazil, received her PhD from Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and completed residency at LSU. She is also a board-certified Anatomic Pathologist.

Meet Louie, a four-month-old pot-bellied and Kunekune pig crossbreed with a spunky personality! He loves to cuddle, receive belly scratches and follow his owners around everywhere. 🐷

Louie recently visited the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine Animal Health Center for a routine surgery. Owner Reagan Todd was a bit nervous about the procedure, especially since Louie would need to stay at the college overnight and undergo anesthesia. Raegan shared that she couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

“Dr. Kristen McCaslin, explained everything I asked about thoroughly and kindly. She helped ease the worries that I had about him going under for the surgery. Our vet student, Alana Summerford, called me with updates at least 3 times a day. Since he had to stay overnight the day before the procedure, she kept me updated with how he was doing that afternoon and through the night. I was assured that he was being checked on frequently, and that he was given lots of love during his stay.”

Louie had a successful surgery and has since returned home with his family, with AHC staff providing guidance to the family on post-op care and recovery procedures. Dr. McCaslin called the family a few days later to check on Louie, and that act of kindness didn’t go unnoticed by Reagan.

“My husband and I appreciate the care that they gave to Louie and his surgery. We drove 3 hours from Laurel to bring him to the CVM for his procedure, and we are so grateful that we did for him to receive the absolute best care.”

The Nancy Fair Link Laminitis Research Center at the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine invites individuals to advance equine health through the gift of a horse for research.

Established as one of the first research centers of its kind, the NFLLRC is dedicated to improving the prevention, diagnosis and management of equine laminitis. Through innovative research and collaboration, its goal is to improve the lives of horses and the people who care for them.

To support this work, the Center is building a research herd comprised of healthy horses that will participate in non-invasive studies focused on nutrition, exercise, early disease detection and the evaluation of new approaches to preventing and managing laminitis. These studies are designed to enhance the understanding of equine health while maintaining the highest standards of animal care and welfare.

The NFLLRC is seeking contributions of a variety of breeds between five and 12 years of age that possess a good temperament and sound feet. Both mares and geldings are eligible for consideration. Horses accepted into the program will become part of a long-term research herd at Mississippi State and will play an important role in helping our researchers develop solutions that benefit horses across the state, country and world.

Applications are now open for the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine DVM Early Entry Program!

This program allows high-achieving high school seniors to earn pre-approved acceptance into the DVM program. If accepted, students will complete their prerequisites within one of Mississippi State’s undergraduate degree programs. To access the CVM-EEP application, prospective students must be accepted into MSU and meet the following requirements:

Minimum ACT composite or superscore of 27, or an SAT score of 1260
Minimum GPA of 3.6
Three letters of recommendation, including one academic reference, one animal reference and one other reference of the applicant’s choosing. Family members should not be used as references.

Moose’s owner might be a big Crimson Tide fan, but he’s proudly wearing his new MSU VetMed merch!

Four-year-old Moose visited the CVM on Monday for a recheck appointment with our neurology team. Just a few weeks ago, he received a hemilaminectomy: a back surgery performed to relieve spinal pressure caused by a herniated disc. Moose’s recovery has gone extremely well, and he’s even walking again.

Many animals like Moose come from around the region to receive care at the CVM, and they end up leaving as new supporters of the college. We think that deserves a big “Hail State” for Moose and his family!
