Today, the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine celebrated Pharmacy Technician Day!

Did you know that the MSU CVM has a full pharmacy within our Animal Health Center? Our pharmacy technicians play an important role in patient care by ensuring medication accuracy, maintaining inventory and assisting clinicians. They make a huge impact on the health and well-being of all who come through our doors.

The annual Hill’s Halloween Dog Jog brought all the fun to the MSU CVM over the weekend!

Students, faculty, staff and community members — and plenty of their four-legged friends — showed off their Halloween spirit on Saturday morning. Whether racing, competing in the pet costume contest, sampling treats at the Pathology Club lesion bake-off or simply just stopping by, there was plenty of excitement in the air! 🎃

The event benefitted the Homeward Bound Project of Mississippi, a non-profit foster-based rescue run by volunteer students and faculty at the CVM.

Mississippi State University will lead its new Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Fish through a five-year award from the U.S. Department of State to advance research and innovation that strengthen global aquatic food systems and create benefits for U.S. agriculture, industry and food security.

The Fish Innovation Lab will be led by MSU’s Global Center for Aquatic Health and Food Security, or GCAHFS, a university center reporting to MSU’s Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine and the Office of Research and Economic Development.

Meet Thor, our Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine Pet of the Week!

This precious Golden Retriever is owned by Jayla Vance, a senior Veterinary Medical Technology Program student and clinical pathology emergency lab technician, and first-year DVM student Ethan Holifield.

Thor loves carrying his toys around, lounging upside down and taking car rides… because of the possibility that it ends with him getting a pup cup! Enjoy all the pup cups you want, sweet boy!

MSU CVM Animal Health Center anesthesia technician Kayla Matta is now a Veterinary Technician Specialist in Anesthesia and Analgesia (VTS-AA)!

Matta is from Dedham, Mass., and received her veterinary technology degree in 2013 from Mount Ida College, which is now part of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. She became a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) in 2014 and worked at Tufts Veterinary Emergency Treatment Specialty for over 10 years before moving to Mississippi in 2025.

“Teaching and strengthening the skills and knowledge of the next generation of veterinary technicians and veterinarians is my passion, and that’s how I found myself here at MSU.”

To become a VTS, a candidate must spend at least five years working in the department where they specialize. As part of the application process, Matta logged 60 anesthesia cases, wrote four lengthy case reports and passed the board exam.

The Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine was thrilled to welcome members of the Dean’s Council to the Wise Center on Friday.

This council assists Dean Nicholas Frank in key areas of promotion, growth and sustainability by providing strategic advice regarding vision, direction and long-term planning of the college. It also serves as an advocate of the college to university administration, the State of Mississippi and on a national level.

The Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine presented our graduate students with new monogrammed lab coats this week.

The coats were given to recognize the important contributions of our grad students to the college's missions of research, education and service.

This is just a small token of appreciation for the hard work these students put into their research. We hope they enjoy these coats for years to come!

GEAUX DAWGS!

Mississippi State is back in action this weekend against LSU, and Lily the Border Collie is not shy to show just how she feels about those Tigers! We’ve heard she’s not a fan of Lane Kiffin, either… he’s been pretty good at losing this year, and we hope that continues on Saturday.

Shoutout LSU School of Veterinary Medicine for taking care of a live tiger on campus, though. That’s pretty cool.
