Mississippi State Associate Professor of Political Science Benjamin Tkach said people often tend to think of military strength in terms of stealth jets and billion-dollar tech, but the reality of how most of the world arms itself is quite different.

“The global security regime is underpinned by value arms,” Tkach explained.

That premise drives a major MSU research project he is leading, Engaging in Strategic Competition in the Value Arms Market: Enhancing U.S. Defense Industrial Engagement with Allies and Partners.

At Mississippi State, where formulas and figures fill the syllabus, Instructor II Kim Walters brings something less measurable, but just as essential, to her mathematics classroom: confidence.

“I began teaching because I enjoy helping people learn,” Walters said. “I enjoy teaching them about something that I like and helping them be successful and confident."

OUR PEOPLE: MEET GREG & BECCA THORN

Mississippi State husband and wife Greg and Becca Thorn work in two different areas of the university, but both help students discover their own voices.

Greg crafts stories through light, theater and live production as a faculty member in the College of Arts and Sciences, while Becca shares them through her role in the Division of Strategic Communications and its Office of Public Affairs. Though their communication careers have taken separate forms, they intersect in surprising and meaningful ways.

RESEARCH IN THE HEADLINES: Dr. Michael Nadorff

The shift from daylight-saving time to standard-time and then back is more than just an inconvenience—it’s a public health issue according to Mississippi State University psychologist Michael Nadorff.

As national conversations continue over whether the U.S. should permanently end the twice-yearly clock changes, Nadorff’s research on sleep and mental health offers an important reminder: changing the clocks may be the real problem.
