Every duck hunter in the Deep South is asking the same question: Where are the mallards—and where are the ducks?

MS State Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture Department waterfowl researcher and MSU Extension Gamebird Program specialist James Callicutt joins the Duck Season Somewhere podcast for a grounded, honest look at what’s happening across the Lower Mississippi Valley.

From shifting weather patterns and changing agriculture to habitat loss and hunting pressure, the conversation dives into what hunters are seeing—and why. Callicutt also shares early insights from GPS-marked mallards, northern pintails, and gadwalls, helping us better understand how dabbling ducks are using today’s southern landscape—and how we can improve it.

🎓🌿 Honoring the MS State Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture Department Class of 2026🌿🎓

This past week, we gathered to celebrate our graduating students during a meaningful ceremony filled with reflection, appreciation, and pride. The College of Forest Resources, Mississippi State University Dean Dr. Wes Burger shared remarks recognizing the commitment, perseverance, and achievements of our graduates, while also acknowledging the families and supporters who helped make this milestone possible.

Faculty joined the celebration as each graduate shared their name, major, and a moment of gratitude for those cheering them on. To commemorate the occasion, every Mississippi State University graduate received a silver acorn, symbolizing growth, resilience, and the lasting impact they are prepared to make in the field of conservation.

The celebration concluded with a reception where conversations, congratulations, and memories were shared. We are incredibly proud of our graduates and look forward to seeing how they will shape the future of our natural resources.

Calculating pure live seed (PLS) is one of the most commonly ignored steps in the food plot planting process. Do not ignore this simple yet vital step that will set the trajectory of your food plot for months to come.

If you ignore PLS, your food plot will be sparse, prone to unnecessary w**d problems, and will not be meeting its forage production potential.

🌱 Annual Pollinator Gardening at Thompson Hall

On May 2, volunteers came together for the annual pollinator garden workday hosted by the College of Forest Resources, Mississippi State University Dean's Council, helping maintain and enhance the landscape at the front of Thompson Hall. Faculty, students, and staff spent the morning working side by side, continuing a tradition that has helped transform this space over the past several years.

Thank you to everyone who dedicated their time and effort to support this project and help keep our campus looking its best. Your hard work makes a lasting impact!

👔📊 Professional practice in action!

MS State Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture Department students in Dr. Manuel Ruiz Aravena’s WFA 4263/6263 Wildlife Diseases course presented their final semester projects in a professional research presentation setting.

This exercise prepares students for collaborative research environments and professional settings—such as presenting to landowners, stakeholders, and agency partners—while practicing how to confidently respond to questions on the spot. A valuable, hands‑on experience connecting classroom learning to real‑world application!
