We are making this post to provide clarity to incoming questions and concerns regarding photos of a vehicle struck deer that have surfaced on social media.

This white-tailed deer was struck by a vehicle early this morning on Market Garden Rd on Fort Campbell. This deer was within one of Fort Campbell Fish & Wildlife's intensively managed and restricted areas where much of our long-term population management strategies have been occurring since 2014.

We have closely monitored this particular deer's progression over recent years (along with other deer of this age class and size). Below are several photos that were taken during annual trail camera surveys conducted in this restricted area.

After collection of this animal, Wildlife Biologists estimate this deer at approximately 7 years of age. This estimate was derived from past encounters, photographs from recent years, and tooth wear.

This was an unfortunate incident for the deer and individual involved. We would like to express our concern for the driver and hope no injuries occurred.

On this episode of Deer University, we continue our discussion of nutrition, genetics, and epigenetics with Dr. Eric Michel, who earned his PhD working on this project. Bronson, Steve, and Marcus wrap the episode up with a summary of this research and how to apply it.

After you listen to this episode, we encourage you to go to the Deer University website (link below) and ask us a question. If we get enough questions we will devote the next episode of Deer U to answering them.

As the first day of bow season approaches tomorrow, please be sure to wear a safety harness. Take the extra few minutes to put it on. It's much better than potentially having to live the rest of your life paralyzed or worse. We all want to see our family and the the top of a deer stand again. Be safe and good luck, Mississippi!

Why do deer have antlers?

No other group of animals has these unique bones. While antlers evolved mostly as weapons, they have other purposes as well. Research indicates that bigger antlers may be a signal of age-related dominance. Bucks will often posture and spar in order to create hierarchies. Antlers can also indicate male quality to females—in other words, female deer might find larger antlers attractive when breeding season comes around. It was great to have ran into Mississippi State alumni from the College of Forest Resources and to have had one of State's former quarterbacks, Tyler Russell, support our efforts. It was a great opportunity to have helped the Magnolia Branch of QDMA and to have represented the Hail State Student Branch of the Quality Deer Management Association. We are all passionate about ensuring the future of white-tailed deer and passing it on to future generations.

We hope to see all of you there tonight. If you are not able to attend but want to stay involved, please email Chandler Guy at [email protected] or Kidd Parker at [email protected].

Also, our student branch donated nearly 100 items to the flood victims of Louisiana. We couldn't be more grateful for our great members!

08/23/2016

Good morning everyone,

I hope you all have started off with a good semester or a good week of work. We just wanted to give you an update on the first QDMA meeting and an event to participate in.

We are still deciding on a date for the first meeting. Please expect the meeting to be next week. We will send out an email as soon as we decide, and the email will be sent out several days before the meeting.

Also, we are participating in “United for Louisiana” to aid in collecting items for the flood victims of Louisiana. It is also a competitive drive between student organizations.

The following items to donate are: Cleaning supplies, toiletries, infant items, pet supplies, bottle water and non-perishable food items. We are not collecting clothes.

If you would like to participate, please bring your items to any of the following officers: Chandler Guy, Kidd Parker, Ryan Hamrick and Konner Burke.

There will be a prize for whoever donates the most items. Officers will keep inventory of the items to their respective donor.

To contact any officer, their contact information is:

Chandler Guy - [email protected]
Kidd Parker (Vice President) - [email protected]
Ryan Hamrick (Secretary) - [email protected]
Konner Burke - [email protected]

Thank you,

We hope that everyone had a great summer and is ready to hit the ground running this fall semester! Deer season cannot come fast enough for us. We would like to give you some updates about this year's events and our banquet information.

Our banquet will be held November 17, 2016, at the Mossy Oak Outlet Pavilion. That is the Thursday before the Arkansas game here at Mississippi State. We plan on cooking some pigs at the banquet to get ready to cook them again on Saturday during the game.

We plan on participating in the MWFP Super Hunt later this fall, having a venison cook out and having a bow shoot.

Please continue to follow us as we prepare meeting dates and hammering out more details for events. Thank you and have a great first week of classes!
