Great job by a student digging into Blackfeet remains that could and should be repatriated by UM. Before she graduated in May, Lily Meskers dug deep on a story that is this week's episode of the Kaimin Cast, available on most podcast platforms. The NAGPRA team at UM that should have talked to her chose not to. She did the story anyway. It's a great example of tenacity and storytelling. Go Lily! Go Kaimin!

Pretty great news just out about national recognition for The Obit Project, produced here at the J-School and with the Montana Media Lab and edited by Prof. Jule Banville along with co-host Jad Abumrad and Montana Media Lab Director Mary Auld. The podcast was named a finalist in the competitive Limited Series - Documentary category in the Signal Awards. Episode 2 - "For Ruth" - was also named a finalist in a category recognizing inclusion. That distinction makes the project and the episode eligible for votes for a Listener's Choice award. Links are in the comments if you'd like to show a little love and throw a vote our way. So proud for the recognition of the narrative audio skills we continue to teach!

For 25 years, the School of Journalism has hosted working journalists to mentor our students through the T. Anthony Pollner Distinguished Professorship. This homecoming many of those incredible professors will come back to UM to say thank you to the family and reconnect with former students, the J-faculty and alums. We're also throwing in a retirement party for Denise who's signing off on her teaching career in December. We'd love to see you at Homecoming this year to celebrate these milestones.

We’re excited to announce the broadcast premiere of the 2026 student documentary, Ripple Through the Rockies on Thursday, September 3 at 8:30 pm on Montana PBS .

Outdoor recreation has long defined both community and tradition in the gateway communities surrounding Glacier National Park. Drawn by the promise of snow-covered peaks, clear rivers, and alpine trails, visitors and locals have sustained a $5 billion annual economy built on skiing, hiking, and fishing. But as seasonal patterns grow increasingly unpredictable, the natural trends that once shaped life in Northwest Montana are beginning to shift.

Shorter winters, inconsistent snowpack, and changing river conditions are altering not only the landscape, but the livelihoods tied to it. This film captures the uncertainty facing business owners, workers, and residents navigating an unstable future.

At its core, the film is a portrait of adaptation and resilience. It reveals how a place defined by its natural resources is confronting rapid transformation, as communities work to preserve their way of life in the face of this Ripple Through the Rockies.

Featuring original music by the River Ramblers Hope you’ll tune in!
