Setting the stage for winter survival! September is all about preparation for beekeepers. Nectar flows have slowed or stopped, colonies are raising their final rounds of brood, and beekeepers must take steps to ensure their hives are strong enough to survive the coming winter. Here's some things to consider as cooler weather approaches:

Have you monitored and treated for Varroa mites?
- Varroa mites remain a large threat to winter survival. By September, their populations may be at their highest.
Have you evaluated food stores?
- Colonies need adequate honey reserves to survive winter, but nectar availability is dropping fast.
Have you assessed queen quality and brood patterns?
- Your queen’s performance in the fall is critical for producing healthy winter bees.
