Meet our 2026 Distinguished Alumni! 🎓🌟

Doug Powers, DWU class of 1978, originally planned on attending SDSU because it was close to his family farm. It was an encounter with DWU’s track coach, John Hartung, that changed his mind and led him to choose Dakota Wesleyan. Doug has become a respected business leader in the Mitchell community and has built a distinguished career with Martin & Associates and later, Innovative Systems.

His connection and devotion to Dakota Wesleyan extends far beyond his time here as a student. Doug served on the Board of Trustees for 12 years, six as the chair. Under his leadership, he guided the university through a pivotal era of transition and growth, including the appointment of President Dan Kittle. Doug and his wife, Shiori, have also been faithful supporters of DWU financially.

“My DWU experience has taught me to become a lifelong learner and how to give back so that future DWU students can have the same enriching opportunities and experiences that I was given.”​

Doug will be honored as a 2026 Distinguished Alumnus at the Legacy Banquet this October.
