This past weekend, brothers from Monaca-Center Lodge #791, and various other Lodges throughout the region, and appendant bodies, joined with several local politicians and representatives from the American Legion and a local MC, to honor the Tuskeegee Airmen with a wreath laying ceremony at the memorial in the Sewickley Cemetery. The event was a fitting honor for these brave men, and included drummers, a bagpiper, and trumpeter, also several doves were released in their memory.

Did you know the Stanely Cup is named for a Freemason?

On this date, in 1908, Bro. Frederick Arthur Stanley, the 16th Earl of Derby, passed away. You would probably better know Bro. Stanley for the cup that bears his name; it is presented to the championship team during each season of the National Hockey League (NHL).

A prominent English politician, Stanley was appointed Governor General of Canada in 1888. While in Canada, his sons became enamored with the sport of hockey. To support this, Bro. Stanley donated a cup to commemorate a match in 1892. It didn't officially become the NHL trophy until 1926.

Stanley was a member of Royal Alpha Lodge No. 16, London, England. (Thanks to Today in Masonic History for the information!)

While Shriners International might be the best known fez wearing group, there are several Masonic bodies that also wear fezzes. The Mystic Order of Veiled Prophets of the Enchanted Realm, better known as the Grotto, was founded in the late 1800's in upstate New York. The organization spread rapidly, with hundreds of local chapters popping up across the country. Today, Pennsylvania is home to 9 local Grottos and has its own Grotto Association for the State. Judging from this early picture of the founders of the group, they definitely knew how to have fun!

Many of the symbols found in Freemasonry originate in ancient culture. The "Momento Mori," which contemplates man's mortality, can be traced back thousands of years. The example shown here is a mosaic from a home in ill-fated Pompeii, dating to approximately 30 BCE — 14 CE. One interpretation states that it shows death as "the great leveler" through which all men eventually become equal. This piece is on display at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, Italy.
