The turf-to-meadow project is well underway on campus as 4.5 acres of lawn is now growing into a biodiverse meadow.

Glenn Bupp, Penn State Extension horticulture educator, who has been working with the campus to plan and execute this project recently gave a presentation at the ANREP (Association of Natural Resource Extension Professionals) 15th Biennial Conference in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Bupp’s presentation, “Team Collaboration and Overcoming Challenges in Meadow Establishment,” highlighted the project and collaboration with Carey McDougall, regional chancellor of Penn State Beaver and Penn State Shenango, and Lacey Goldberg, a staff landscape architect for the Office of Physical Plant at Penn State, to bring it to fruition.

We were thrilled to participate in the Fourth Grade Career Pathways Day at Perry Lower Intermediate School in the Ellwood City School District.

Dr. Michael Hay, associate professor of chemistry, did one demonstration where he blew up a hydrogen balloon with a torch and another where he mixed two liquid chemicals to make slime.

The students also had a chance to learn about our summer camps and spin a prize wheel with Dana Alvetro, education program coordinator for Penn State Beaver’s Office of Continuing Education, and participate in a robotics activity with Admissions Counselor Johnny Vanderhoff.

Congratulations to all who received tenure-line faculty promotions, effective July 1, including Dr. Robin Bower, who was promoted to professor of Spanish, Dr. Kate McLean, who was promoted to professor of criminal justice, and Dr. Autumn Sabo, who was promoted to associate professor of biology, all within the University College.
