We will be hosting our annual field day at the farm on Wednesday July 26th. Below is the press release with speakers and topics. We will have a stop at our Wood chip Bioreactor that will be under construction and open to allow attendees to see how these are plumbed to efficiently digest unused nitrogen that would normally escape the tile lines. This is a new two stage design that has been developed by Dr Laura Christianson and will be regularly sampled by research farm staff and analyzed by Dr. Christianson to determine it's effectiveness at removing nitrogen from tile lines. Hope to see you there.

The program is set for the 36th annual University of Illinois’ Northwestern Agricultural Research Center Field Day. The program will begin at 8 am on Wednesday, July 26th. Spring is in the air! The soil is drying, fertilizer is being applied, and soil temps are rising. In some places around the state field conditions are ready to plant, even though the optimum timing is a few weeks away. Some farmers are wondering if they should plant as earlier as possible this year in case we have a repeat of 2012. To help answer this question we decided to plant a small field at the NWRC on March 8th at different depths. Seed is planted at depths of 1.5", 2", 2.5" and 3". Current soil temps are ranging between 50 and 58. Progress of this planting will be posted over the next several weeks.

With the 2015 harvest progressing rapidly, it will only be a short time before the 2016 season is here. A recent webcast was created by Dr. Nicholas Tinsley discussing the value of tools designed to control corn rootworm. This could be a useful tool as you make input decisions for next year.

Although there are individual marestail and giant ragw**d plants that have also poked their way through the soybean canopy, by and large the primary w**d species competin…
