On Saturday, May 23, 2020, Campus Pride in partnership with PFLAG National will host a national “Lavender Graduation” for LGBTQ and ally graduates of the Class of 2020 to celebrate and honor their achievements. This free, live streaming event to celebrate will begin airing at 3 p.m. ET / 12 p.m. PT at CampusPride.org/2020 and across Campus Pride and PFLAG’s social media channels.
“Everyone deserves to be recognized and to have the joy of graduating – and this is one way virtually we can celebrate and honor these phenomenal LGBTQ and ally college students,” said Shane Windmeyer, Executive Director of Campus Pride. “Please join us in commemorating this special moment in the lives of these LGBTQ and ally youth across the country.”
Of note, 2020 marks the 25th anniversary of the very first Lavender Graduation organized at University of Michigan by Ronni Sanlo, a pioneer of campus organizing for le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender and q***r (LGBTQ+) people within higher education. Since 1995, Lavender Graduations have been a commencement tradition for LGBTQ and ally college students that is now included in many universities across the United States. Sanlo will be a featured speaker along with LGBTQ and ally graduates and soon to be announced notable leaders and celebrities.
