Applying for jobs shouldn’t feel like yelling into the void.. [and it doesn’t have to!] It can be easy to slip into a mindset of throwing your résumé out into the world and just hoping something sticks. But slowing it down can actually save you time.

It’s less about volume, more about direction.
Practical tips:

read - job descriptions more closely
check- if the role /company actually fit what you want
tailor- your resume with intention

You don’t have to apply to everything for it to “count.”
Intentional effort > fast effort. Use systems. Apply intentionally. Be strategic.

Gabriella Velazquez did not arrive at Montclair with a clear plan. Like many students, she navigated uncertainty, explored different paths, and worked through self-doubt while trying to figure out where she belonged. Today, as a rising senior, she is preparing for an operations internship with Coach USA, a role that reflects both her career direction and how much she has grown.

Her journey was not linear. She changed directions, questioned herself, and faced imposter syndrome. But through mentorship, campus involvement, and career advising, things began to click. A key turning point came through a career fair connection that led to mentorship, helping her build confidence and strengthen her communication skills!

With support from her career advisor, she was able to connect her strengths to a clear path forward in operations. What made the difference:

• Saying yes to new experiences
• Building relationships through mentorship
• Getting involved and stepping into leadership
• Using career advising to find direction

Now, she is stepping into an internship where she will gain hands-on experience and continue growing both personally and professionally.
