Montclair State University- Newark Montclair Urban Teacher Residency The Newark Montclair Urban Teacher Residency (NMUTR) Program is a partnership between the Newark Public Schools and Montclair State University.

Preparing the Teachers of Tomorrow:

Montclair State University has a long and illustrious history of preparing highly qualified teachers for our region's public schools.The NMUTR program is a highly competitive full-time Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program designed to fully close the academic Achievement Gap between minority students and their non-minority peers. Why Urban Schools? Roughly

50% of all urban public school teachers leave within the first three years. The retention rate for Urban Teacher Residency (UTR) grads beyond those crucial first three years is 85%. It’s a difference that’s transforming districts. The NMUTR program has an intensive hands-on focus on preparing teachers of tomorrow. Residents are apprenticed to experienced teachers who serve as their mentors and they are trained by expert faculty from the College of Education and Human Services (CEHS). This is a premier and innovative college of education, inventing better ways to prepare educators for the classroom. We are seeking exceptional candidates interested in becoming teachers in the Newark Public Schools. The ideal candidate for this program is someone who is enthusiastic, highly motivated, and loves working with people for diverse backgrounds. In addition, this person has to be dedicated and passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of students. The NMUTRP requires a commitment of three years teaching in the Newark Public Schools after completing the program. During that time, candidates will receive intensive mentoring to support their development as teachers.

Our very own NMUTR Secondary Education Resident Deliris Diaz was recently accepted into the 2019 cohort of the Knowles Teacher Initiative!

Diaz is a graduate of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, holding a Bachelor of Science in Biophysics and a minor in Applied Mathematics. She was a student researcher there, working on the Dynamic Instability of Taxol Stabilized Microtubules, and also mentored high school students in research. Currently student teaching at East Side High School in Newark, she is set to graduate with her MAT in K-12, Physics this month!
