Montclair’s School of Nursing celebrated 53 nursing students with a formal Pinning Ceremony on May 5. The ceremony signified the completion of their degree requirements, allowing them to sit for the state licensure exam and begin the transition into professional nursing practice.

Gianna DeRienzo, President of the Montclair State University Student Nurses Association, told the gathering, “You have seen us grow, from being scared to wake a patient up for morning vitals, to administering meds with confidence.”

“Some of you have had your blood pressure taken more times than you would like to admit, or remember, and others have had to sit through physical assessments and patient education. You complain of a headache and now you have to play 20 questions with your student nurse,” Clinical Specialist Elsie Alabi-Gonzalez joked.

Some students also received awards recognizing their educational achievements: Gianna DeRienzo and Melissa Fede (Clinical Excellence), Catherine Munkittrick and Helena Van Vliet (Academic Excellence in Nursing) and Layan Rhazi and Aisha Shabbir (Spirit of Nursing).

INACSL’s Healthcare Simulation Standards Endorsement recognizes healthcare institutions that have demonstrated excellence in applying all four of the following simulation standards from the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice in their educational simulation programs: Prebriefing, Facilitation, Professional Integrity, and Debriefing.

✅ Educating members of the community on cardiac risk factors.
✅ Providing personalized cardiac health resources.
✅ Completing clinical hours without having to leave campus.

Today our BSN students conducted a successful cardiac risk screening and education initiative for members of the campus community! After taking participants' blood pressure, heart rate, blood sugar, and cholesterol, they were able to provide personalized resources to improve cardiac health.

A special shoutout to members of Montclair State Fire Safety for supporting this initiative! 😀
