Montclair State University PhD in Family Science & Human Development A Social Justice Approach to Strengthening Individuals, Families and Communities The Ph.D. The, multidisciplinary nature of Family Studies makes Ph.D.

Family Science & Human Development is a multi- and interdisciplinary field, drawing on a range of social science disciplines including sociology, social work, education, gerontology, and community and developmental psychology. program considers family life within larger socio-cultural contexts and explores how issues of power, privilege, and social justice interact to differentially impact family

configurations. Students come from a variety of fields including family studies, human development, education, social work, human services, psychology, disability and rehabilitation services, gerontology, and sociology. Family Studies scholars focus on the strengths and challenges of family life, researching a diverse range of issues, and seeking solutions to improve conditions for families worldwide. graduates very attractive to employers in higher education, government, and nonprofit and private sectors. Graduates of the program will be prepared to pursue a wide range of professional opportunities as faculty members in colleges and universities, program administrators, researchers and evaluators, policymakers, and positions in organizations focusing on children, youth, adults, older adults, and families.

Donna Meeker-O'Rourke, a doctoral candidate in FSHD, was awarded the Murray Straus Award from the Institute on Violence, Abuse, and Trauma (IVAT) for her poster titled “Supporting the Supporters: Coping, Self-Care, and Reflexivity Among Qualitative Researchers Working with Intimate Partner Violence Survivors” , which she will be presenting at the IVAT Summit next month. Per the message below, ‘The Murray Straus Award acknowledges significant contribution of original research conducted on the integration of multiple forms of interpersonal violence or original research on interpersonal violence prevention or intervention.' This research stems from her dissertation project. A big congratulations to Donna!
