Ayer tuvimos el primer evento del semestre del Spanish and Latino Studies Dept., ¡el almuerzo de bienvenida de español! Comimos, jugamos y recibimos la visita de nuestro amigo Rocky! ¡Hay muchos más eventos por venir, consulta aquí y nuestras otras redes sociales para obtener información!

Yesterday we had the first Spanish and Latino Studies Dept. event of the semester, the Spanish Major Welcome Lunch! We had food, played games, and even got a visit from our pal Rocky! There are many more events coming up, so stay tuned here and on our other socials for the info!

We had a great time last night and we hope you did too! Thank you so much to everyone who came out to watch the audio description of Argentina, 1985. Dr. Vizcaíno led an open forum afterwards to discuss elements within the movie that can be enhanced with the use of audio description. It was some of our guests first time experiencing audio description too! Stay tuned for more events like this!

One of our Spanish majors, Dalia Vargas Machuca, started volunteering this semester as a Spanish/English interpreter at Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative, an organization that provides "free healthcare for the working uninsured in Bergen County, NJ." She says that volunteering builds your confidence and adds: "I love that I can help connect two people even though there is a language barrier."

Congratulations to Dr. Antonella Calarota-Ninman! She has received an award from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in recognition of her commitment to collegiality and creating a community of care for faculty, staff, and students. We are so happy to have her as part of our Department. ¡Enhorabuena, Profesora!

A very big thank you to everyone who came to Café Literario Tuesday! Dr. Zapata led the group in a discussion of “Oda a los calcetines”, poem by Pablo Neruda. We explored the importance of lexical choices, the value of symbolism, and just how special ‘un par de calcetines’ really is! Can’t wait to see you all next month for our next reading!

Muchas gracias a todos los que vinieron martes al Café Literario. El Dr. Zapata dirigió al grupo en un conversación sobre "Oda a los calcetines", poema de Pablo Neruda. Exploramos la importancia de las elecciones léxicas, el valor del simbolismo y lo especial que es realmente "un par de calcetines". No puedo esperar a veros a todos el mes que viene para nuestra próxima lectura.
