Follow the Hornets as we lead, innovate, and make room for greatness. Alabama State University was founded in 1867, in Marion, Ala., as a school for African-Americans. The school started as the Lincoln Normal School with $500 raised by nine freed slaves now known as the Marion Nine, making ASU one of the nation’s oldest institutions of higher education founded for black Americans.

Greatness grows through opportunity!

At Alabama State University, emerging artists learn from accomplished musicians who help them sharpen their skills and expand their possibilities.

Internationally acclaimed pianist, educator and scholar Donald Berman led a masterclass in the Tullibody Recital Hall, giving aspiring pianists the opportunity to refine their craft with an artist who has performed on stages around the world.

Experiences like these help our students grow in confidence, artistry and vision as they prepare for their own futures in music.
