Historically, Juneteenth represents a pivotal moment in the fight for Black liberation. On this day in 1865, Major General Gordon Granger delivered the long-awaited proclamation of freedom in Galveston, Texas. The arrival of this declaration, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, marked a turning point in our nation’s history and the promise of liberation and restorative justice for Black Americans. This day commemorates the resilience and enduring strength of Black Americans in their pursuit of freedom and equality in our nation.
For generations, Black Americans have persevered through adversity, discrimination, and prejudice with an unwavering spirit of hope. They have leveraged the power of grassroots organizing and civic engagement to advocate for a society that is more just, equitable, and inclusive for us all. By celebrating Juneteenth, we honor their accomplishments and recognize the potential within us all to make change within our society.
Through our celebration of Juneteenth, Moorpark College reaffirms our dedication to dismantling systemic barriers, challenging prejudice, and promoting education that fosters empathy and inclusivity. Our celebration of Juneteenth reminds us that the pursuit of knowledge, justice, and equality should be at the forefront of all our endeavors.
As we take today to reflect on the Black experience, may we find renewed inspiration to continue learning, advocating, and fostering a campus environment that uplifts and empowers every member of our community.
