Meet Candace Jones, EdD '26 — VP of Administrative and Business Services at Long Beach City College, and winner of SMC's 2026 Outstanding Dissertation of the Year 🎓

Her research dug into something rarely studied: the gap between colleges' stated equity values and what Black staff members actually experience on campus. Twenty-five years into her career in higher ed, she came to SMC's EdD in Leadership program looking for one thing — faculty who saw education as a vehicle for real change. She found it.

"You can have passion for the equity work and still not make any impact," she says. "Now I'm walking out with the tools and skills necessary to really transform my institution."

Studying abroad in the south of France. Hitting it off with a recruiter at a Career Center event. Landing her first job after graduation 🎓. When Rose duPont ’26 thinks about her unique journey, she can’t help but see Saint Mary’s impact.

A former President of Gael Women in Business with a degree in Finance and Music, Rose spent spring 2025 studying and working in Aix-en-Provence, France. “Thanks to study abroad, I felt like I was a lot more confident in my skills in terms of socializing with new people and trying new things,” she says.

Soon, she brought those skills to her first corporate internship. After connecting with a Wells Fargo representative at an SMC job fair, she applied and was a selected for a competitive Commercial Banking Summer Internship. Now, on August 16, she’s stepping into a full-time commercial banking analyst role at Wells Fargo’s San Francisco office.
