This weekend, we had the honor of celebrating the retirement of Dr. Hans Paerl after 47 extraordinary years at the UNC Institute of Marine Sciences.

Friends, family, colleagues, and former students from around the world gathered to recognize Hans’s incredible contributions to limnology, estuarine ecology, and water quality research. The celebration included a BBQ at IMS, a research symposium highlighting his groundbreaking fieldwork, and a dinner at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum.

With nearly 600 academic publications, seven major awards, and long-term water quality programs like ModMon and FerryMon, Hans’s scientific legacy has shaped environmental management and policy both in North Carolina and globally.

Thank you, Hans, for your leadership, mentorship, curiosity, and commitment to science. Your impact on IMS, the state, and the broader scientific community is profound.
