NCSSM-Morganton The Morganton campus of the nation’s first public, residential STEM high school, challenging and inspiring NC students.

In 2016, North Carolina voters passed the Connect NC bond package which included $58 million to grow a second campus of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Morganton (NCSSM). Planning commenced in late-2016 with the hiring of an architectural firm, educational program design consultants, and a planning director. NCSSM will open its second campus in 2022 to the first class of residential students.

On Saturday, our newest Dragons experienced a fun and educational Hometown Walkabout, hosted by The Industrial Commons. Our students were able to spend time in downtown Morganton, learning more about the community, connecting with local organizations and businesses, and bonding over the joy of sights and samples. Thank you to all the businesses, organizations, and volunteers that made this day a success!

As NCSSM-Morganton prepared to welcome 150 new students to campus, we were honored to share a glimpse into their academic future with NC Secretary of Commerce Lee Lilley, Olivia Collier, Brandon Rupp, and Phil Boggan. During the tour, Secretary Lilley and colleagues learned more about our collaboration with local industry through research and mentorship opportunities throughout the region.

This summer, NCSSM-Morganton gratefully welcomed the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Appalachian State University into the network of UNC System partners helping NCSSM in its state-wide effort to enhance summer enrichment opportunities for students from throughout North Carolina.

These and other UNC System partners play a tremendous role in helping NCSSM achieve the margin of excellence that distinguishes NCSSM-facilitated programming from similar opportunities offered elsewhere.

UNC Charlotte and Appalachian State University each offer a new and unique set of opportunities to enrich the academic and personal development of NCSSM’s students.
