Another semester, another 3 a.m. crime scene.
Juniors in the forensic examiner major were tasked with investigating a complex scene that encompassed all techniques covered in their first semester of CSI.

Students spent 5 hours at the WVU Agronomy Farm completing scene photographs, sketches, measurements, evidence collection and associated packaging. The scene was comprised of multiple zones including clandestine grave excavation, vehicle processing, trash/dump sites, and large open field areas requiring extensive line searches.

The WVU Police Department and the Granville Police Department briefed and interacted with the students during the scene to aid in their experience.

Thomas Ledergerber from the C. Eugene Bennett Department of Chemistry and Dr. Trejos's research group from the Department of Forensic and Investigative Science teamed up with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to study the behavior of gunshot residue in the air. Work performed in this study applied novel methods including laser sheet scattering and atmospheric particle analysis to see and measure gunshot residue in a way that has never been seen before. A special thanks to Matt Staymates from NIST and the Monongalia County Sheriff's Office.

The FBI Evidence Recovery Team recently hosted a training at our Crime Scene Training Complex for local law enforcement agencies. The training served to enhance the knowledge and skills of first responders when responding to critical incidents. The four-day training covered topics such as crime scene management, scene documentation, evidence processing, and FBI/State/Local assets and capabilities. We recognize and appreciate the work of law enforcement and hope this training was invaluable to all the participating agencies.
