More good times tonight at Morgantown Escape Room. We had 10 people this time, so we divided into two groups (one in each game room), and both teams successfully escaped. As always, the staff was fabulous. For us it's unanimous: you really should try the fun, challenging, and unique games created by the owners at Morgantown Escape Room.

The Plant and Soil Science Club is now 3 for 3 at Morgantown Escape Room. We had fun (as always) and our escape time of 39 minutes and 2 seconds was 5 minutes faster than our previous best. While we didn't break the record for Detention Break-Out, our team (a.k.a., "50 Shades of Gley") did record the fastest time for this month.

"The second thing to do is identify the horizon breaks." -- Jim Thompson

While not quite about soil, this video includes some fascinating information about digging holes. For example, the deepest hand-dug hole in the world is the Woodingdean Well in England at 1,285 feet deep.

If we were to journey to the center of the Earth, it would take a lot longer than you might expect. Here's how deep humans have dug underground. Read more: h...

Happy World Soil Day!

In 2013 the United Nations General Assembly declared the 5th of December as World Soil Day to celebrate the importance of soil.

Why? Because soils affect our lives every day, but we don't often think about it. Sustainable soil and land management is critical to ensuring productive food systems, improved rural and urban livelihoods, and a healthy environment. However, current rates of soil degradation threaten the capacity of soils to meet the needs of future generations.

"Soil directly and indisputably affects the wine that is produced in a given region. In addition to climate and aspect, soil is part of what makes a region’s terroir and can separate mediocre winemaking areas from superior ones."

Just another example of how .

Soil is complicated for those of us without a geology degree, but VinePair's illustrated guide explains everything you need to know about major wine soils.
