Congratulations to WVU OT alum, Amanda, for her recognition from the Washington County Public Schools Special Education Citizens Advisory Committee.
According to the American Occupational Therapy Association, "school-based occupational therapy practitioners support academic achievement and social participation by promoting occupation within all school routines, including recess, classroom, and cafeteria time. They help children fulfill their role as students and prepare them for college, career, and community integration. They utilize prevention, promotion, and intervention strategies for mental and physical health and well-being."
Our first SECAC award winner is Amanda Himmelwright in the category of Service Provider.
Amanda is a graduate of West Virginia University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Human Performance and Health Degree in 2001 and then a Master of Occupational Therapy Degree from West Virginia University in 2005. She began her career as an occupational therapist in the medical field before transitioning to school-based occupational therapy in May 2006 after interviewing for an open OT position with Washington County Public Schools. She recently celebrated her 20-year anniversary with WCPS.
Amanda is a passionate advocate for both students and teachers and believes that, with the support of a good occupational therapist, all people are capable of achieving great things. She deeply loves her career and is dedicated to helping students succeed both in and out of the classroom.
Amanda is a prior recipient of the SECAC Service Provider of the Year, awarded in June of 2021, and it is one of her most honored accomplishments.
Amanda has been married to her husband, Adam, for over 20 years, and together they have two daughters. Grace recently completed her sophomore year of college, majoring in Special Education with a minor in Art Education, while Evelyn is a junior in high school with plans to pursue a career in law enforcement and criminology.
Outside of work, she finds happiness in thrifting, exploring new places, running, listening to podcasts, following F1, digging in the dirt, and hiking with her 2-year-old pup "Cali," all while spending meaningful time with family and friends.
Amanda's Current Licensure Status:
Nationally Certified Occupational Therapist, National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT)
Licensed Occupational Therapist, Maryland Board of Occupational Therapy Practice (MBOT)
Congratulations, Amanda!
