The Office of Undergraduate Research presents to you DR. HANNAH MILLER!!!!!

defended her dissertation "Social Media Appearance Pressures and Body Dissatisfaction Among Collegiate Athletes: Group Differences, Influencing Factors, and Mitigating Strategies" today at 10 AM and presented a highly thoughtful and excellent mixed-methods approach that sparked wonderful conversations about student athletes, body image, and social media.

While we will sorely miss Dr. Miller next year, our team is so grateful for all she has done for our program and our students. Post-graduation, Dr. Miller will take on a clinical therapist role at Atrium Health in Charlotte, NC πŸŽ‰

If you know Hannah, you love her - please send this sweet, hardworking, wonderful gal ALL of the congratulations! This is no small feat and we are SO proud!!! πŸ’™πŸ’›

ROCK! STAR! ALERT!

Two of our very own UGR Ambassadors, Caden Ginter and Cloe Ratliff, have been awarded the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship Award! πŸ€©πŸŽ‰

According to , the Goldwater Scholarship is the premiere award for undergraduate STEM researchers. These Mountaineers make us so dang proud!

Caden, a physics and computer science double major, shares that β€œThe world is dominated by quantum computers, medical devices, etc., and understanding it better is the key to a new generation of exciting technology."

Cloe, who will serve as an undergraduate teaching assistant with RAP next year, says β€œI learned I wanted to actually solve the problems in medicine,” she said. β€œI realized I didn’t need to give up either of those goals and could do both as an MD/PhD. Research often excludes people in rural areas, and I want to change that and use it to help solve problems here.”

We cannot put into words how proud we are of Caden and Cloe, and how grateful we are to our colleagues for making these dreams a possibility for our amazing students!

Let's Go!!! πŸ’™πŸ’›

We have some BIG news celebrating our beloved !!!!

Leo Peele, Computer Science Senior and RAP Undergraduate Teaching Assistant, has been accepted to the Masters of Information Security Management program at the Carnegie Mellon University Heinz College. In addition to his acceptance decision, Leo has been awarded the prestigious Heinz College Fellowship with a full-tuition scholarship. This fellowship program is intended to enrich and further prepare emerging leaders who share a commitment to academic excellence, professional impact, and service in their fields. As a fellow, Leo will represent his cohort in and outside of the University.

We just adore Leo and will miss him so much next year - CMU will be a better (and funner!) place because of him, and UGR is so lucky to have had such an amazing and deserving UTA. If you see Leo, give him all the congratulations!!!

Here's to the dreams of all of our amazing undergrads coming true! πŸ’›πŸ’™

UGR, alongside , has been awarded a $22,500 grant to support first-generation student success! 🀩

Approximately 23% of WVU students in Fall 2025 identified as "first-generation", meaning that a student's parents do not possess a four-year degree from a college or university.

Our director, Dr. Cinthia Pacheco, has spearheaded the efforts on this grant in collaboration with Michelle Paden of the REACH Center and Dr. Michelle Richards-Babb, former UGR director and current chemistry department faculty member. If you know these ladies, you know they excel in advancing student success and make it look effortless. UGR's programming efforts would not be possible without their collaboration with our office!

This grant will bridge the gap between high school students who identify as first-gen and entering college through facilitated workshops led by Dr. Pacheco, Dr. Richards-Babb, and Michelle. We are so proud of these rockstars, and all of the first-gen students who dedicate their time and efforts to undergraduate research πŸ˜‡πŸ’›πŸ’™
