🦠 Virus reactivation in acute and long COVID-19

New research published in Nature found frequent reactivation of chronic viruses including EBV, CMV, HSV1 and Anelloviridae in patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Importantly, reactivation wasn't limited to immunosuppressed patients.

By integrating metabolomics with transcriptomics, proteomics and immune profiling, researchers were able to look beyond viral activity itself and uncover the broader biological response.

Distinct metabolic signatures emerged, including changes in amino acid and lipid metabolism, connecting viral reactivation with downstream functional biology.

Global health research, particularly for women and infants, comes from populations in high-income countries. That leaves important gaps in understanding, particularly on how environmental exposures shape health across diverse populations.

That's why today we’re proud to announce the successful completion of multiple global health pilot projects funded by the Gates Foundation, advancing research into conditions that disproportionately affect women and infants in low- and middle-income countries.

These projects show how metabolomics, combined with accessible sample collection methods such as dried blood spots, can help bring high-quality biochemistry profiling to more populations and real-world settings.

Better representation means better biology and, ultimately, better opportunities to improve health outcomes worldwide.

Today, we feature Dr. Natasa Giallourou, Associate Director of Scientific Strategy at Metabolon.

As Natasa explains, multiomics is changing the way we explore biology.

By integrating data across molecular layers and bringing together expertise from different disciplines, researchers can move beyond isolated datasets toward a more complete understanding of biology, and help translate discoveries into real-world impact.
