"To me, engineering means using my skills and abilities to design solutions that improve people's lives." — Alex Stella, Mechanical Engineering Class of 2026

After graduation, Alex completed an internship with Advanced Input Solutions in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, before beginning a master's degree in mechanical engineering in the fall.

At U of I, Alex gained valuable hands-on experience in the Assistive Robotics Laboratory, where he designed and tested wearable exoskeletons for stroke rehabilitation. His work allowed him to apply his engineering skills to developing technology designed to improve people's lives.

Alex also received a semiconductor scholarship that supported his certificate in robotics engineering. The scholarship allowed him to focus his education on a field he finds both interesting and applicable.

Congrats, Alex!

“To me, engineering is about understanding how things work and applying that to problems that actually matter in health, the environment and energy.” - Towfeeq Robi, Chemical and Biological Engineering Class of 2026

After graduation, Towfeeq plans to gain industry experience before eventually pursuing a PhD.

At U of I, Towfeeq gained valuable research experience in Dr. Ching-An Peng’s lab, where he worked with thermo-responsive biomaterials designed to release human mesenchymal stem cells through cooling. He also contributed to a published paper on plasma-based water treatment with Dr. Sarah Wu and presented his research at the Undergraduate Research Symposium.

As an international student from Bangladesh, Towfeeq said the close-knit community within the Chemical and Biological Engineering department helped make the transition to U of I feel smaller and more connected.

Congrats, Towfeeq!

Vandal Engineers take their work across borders!

This summer, our Humanitarian Engineer Corps members Landon Dallman, Quinn Stoker, Casey Cooper, Noah Lorton, Chris Sanchez and Faculty Advisor Fritz Fiedler traveled to Tancuaña, Peru, to begin a multi-year project focused on improving access to reliable, safe drinking water.

The team spent their time learning from the community, collecting water quality and quantity data, interviewing residents and evaluating potential water sources. The team found that local springs and wells could provide viable drinking water, while also identifying challenges with year-round access and filtration.

The project is just getting started. HEC will continue working with the community of Tancuaña and Engineers in Action to develop and compare potential water system designs, with plans to return in 2027 to begin implementation.

Together, the team is working with the community to develop a solution that reflects Tancuaña’s needs, resources and priorities by putting engineering into action where it can make a lasting difference.

"To me, engineering is all about solving problems creatively and making systems work better. It’s where curiosity meets real-world impact." -Lisa Hawkins, Technology Management Class of 2026

After graduation, Lisa plans to continue growing her career in systems administration and technology management. She is also interested in teaching with U of I.

At U of I, Lisa gained hands-on experience by applying what she learned in the Technology Management program directly to real-world projects. Through these experiences, she developed skills in leadership, systems thinking and technical problem-solving.

Lisa said scholarships lifted a huge weight and allowed her to focus fully on learning while balancing school and work. The support also gave her the ability to be there for her husband through his cancer treatments.

Congrats, Lisa!
