U of I animal science master's student studies new approach to dairy calf feeding 🐄

A University of Idaho graduate student's research could help a large Mountain Home dairy reduce the time calves require to mature into productive herd members by changing the way they are fed.

Katie Corder-Steiner, of Mountain Home, is pursuing a master’s degree in animal science, and her thesis project is aimed at eliminating a one- to two-week weight-gain lull dairy calves typically experience following weaning.

She chose the perfect time to invite Caleb Degroot, with Sunview Dairy, to collaborate on the study, as Degroot and his staff were also considering ways to address that lull.

“Katie approached us last spring with the idea of feeding forages and hay to our calves at an earlier age than most people do,” Degroot said. “That had been something our nutrition team had been looking at for a long time.”

University of Idaho doctoral student Emily Martin is studying what effect translocation has on rattlesnake movement in and outside of the snake’s home range. 🗺️🐍

Martin’s research through the University of Idaho College of Science and University of Idaho College of Natural Resources Idaho Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit will determine if snakes return to an area after they have been moved — or translocated — and measure their chance of survival in their new territory.
