🌟Meet this week’s MLML Student Spotlight! 🌟

Olivia Beaudoin (she/her) is a second-year master’s student in the Marine Science program at CSUMB/MLML, working in the Coastal Ecology Lab and Invertebrate Ecology Lab. Olivia is currently researching the geophysical drivers of Pismo clam population distributions along the California coastline.

Olivia received her B.S. in Biology with a concentration in Marine Science from Fairfield University, along with minors in Mathematics and Spanish. During her undergraduate career, she led multiple research projects, including studies on species richness of shelled invertebrates in Long Island Sound, interannual variability of hydrological conditions in a local lake, and cannibalistic behavior of fingerling Brook trout at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo.

Her current thesis work focuses on how geophysical habitat influences Pismo clam populations. In addition to her research, Olivia teaches statistics at CSUMB and mathematics at the X-Academy Math Circle at Cabrillo College. She is also a UROC mentor for four undergraduate researchers in the Haupt Lab and leads over 60 undergraduate volunteers in fieldwork. Outside of MLML, she serves as a Water Quality Specialist for the Town of Fairfield, CT, and is a certified diver.

Olivia has always been an advocate for climate justice and was drawn to marine science because it allows her to make a direct and immediate impact while pursuing her curiosity through applied marine ecology and conservation.

At MLML, Olivia has served as a Student Body Officer (CSUMB Representative) and works as a Front Desk Assistant.

In the future, Olivia plans to pursue a PhD in marine science and coastal ecology, with the goal of becoming a professor and leading her own research lab. 🌊

⭐️Student Spotlight⭐️

Meet Bruno Mattoili, a graduate student in the Ichthyology Lab at the Moss Landing Marine Labs!
Bruno is currently researching the effects of temperatrue on ammonium waste excretion rate and physiology of juvenile blue rockfish. 🐟

He got his bachelors degree in aquatic sciences at UC Santa Barbara, then worked on commercial fishing boats in the Bering Sea as a fisheries observer. Before starting at MLML, he was a scientific aid for California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Invertebrate Management Project processing spiny lobster and brown box crab fishery data. 🦞 🦀

He was inspired to be a marine scientist from frequent childhood visits to the Birch Aquarium, and marine science documentaries on the Discovery Channel (back when the programming was actually educational!)

After MLML, Bruno would like to return to fisheries management and help lead the charge in ensuring the sustainability of marine resources.

In addition to his research, Bruno is a Student Assistant at Marine Operations and is highly involved with commmunity involvemen, including the MLML Open House!

Want to learn more about the amazing student and faculty resarch happening at MLML? Come to the 2026 Open House on Saturday, April 25th!
