Save the Dates: Two Research Events, Two Ways to Get Involved

Exciting research is taking center stage at the Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine. Planning is underway for the Student Research Forum and the 2027 Research Symposium—two engaging opportunities for our college’s medical students to share their work, strengthen their presentation skills, and connect with the research community. Both events celebrate discovery, but each offers a different experience.

Student Research Forum: A Supportive Stage for M-1 and M-2 Students

Designed especially for M-1 and M-2 medical students, the Student Research Forum is a welcoming opportunity to gain presentation experience and showcase their work. Special consideration is given to projects supported by the Summer Scholars Award or completed through the Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine’s Medicine and Society course, but all research conducted by M-1 and M-2 students is encouraged.

Date: February 26 | Time: 8 a.m.–1 p.m. | Location: First floor of the Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine
Selected oral presenters will take the stage in The Dow Chemical Company Foundation Auditorium, while poster presenters will share their work throughout the first floor.

2027 Research Symposium: A Larger Celebration of Research

The 2027 Research Symposium brings together a broader research community, featuring projects from Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine students, faculty and staff, as well as residents, faculty and staff from the graduate medical education area. With oral and poster presentations, a guest plenary speaker, and often as many as 400 attendees, this is the place to share ideas, make connections, and experience research on a larger scale.

Unlike the student-focused forum, the symposium welcomes outside guests and offers awards to presenters sponsored by the Saginaw County Medical Foundation. Dr. Kayleigh Watson, Class of 2019, shared her remarks at the Sept. 22 groundbreaking ceremony for the MyMichigan Health CMU Medical Education Building.

"It's a total honor to be included in this ceremony and to be able to speak on behalf of the College of Medicine. I'm Dr. Kayleigh Watson. I am currently working at HealthSource Saginaw as an adult inpatient psychiatrist, and I'm a faculty member with the Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine Psychiatry Residency Program. And as a graduate of the medical school's class of 2019, it's been such a total full-circle moment to be able to come back to Saginaw and serve this community as faculty.

When I was a trainee completing my psychiatry rotation at HealthSource, which is where I currently work, Dr. Khan was my attending, and he's currently the program director. So it was really special to be able to come back and work with folks who helped train me and solidify my passion for caring for folks in the community, and to continue to work in an environment where I was trained to advocate for my patients and my community.

I feel honored to be here for this new chapter in the history of the medical school, and it's a special pleasure to see our medical students who rotate through the service with us, and then many of them go on to match with us for residency and stay on to become providers in the community. And to me, that really speaks volumes to the training of the program, the service-mindedness of the individuals who work as faculty here, and then just to see so many of our medical students feel so inspired by the level of education that they've received with us, want to stay on, continue to do their training in Saginaw, and then of course go on to become exceptional providers in the region.

I'm really excited for what the future holds for the incoming students and all the upcoming classes who are going to get to experience this new facility and have greater access to clinical care that is going to continue to shape their training. I want to express my gratitude on behalf of the students and the alumni for making this possible."

What we know about mental health continues to grow — and every new discovery can help us better understand how to support people living with mental illness. 🔬

Research can deepen our understanding of mental health conditions, inform new approaches to treatment and support, and help us ask better questions about what people and communities need.

But discovery doesn’t happen in isolation. When scientific research is informed by lived experience, we can work toward care that better reflects the people it is meant to serve.
