Ball State Office of Community Engagement The OCE serves as a bridge between the University and Muncie, Delaware County, and East Central Indiana.

We seek the most effective ways to advance community priorities through authentic partnerships; sustain integration of engagement across teaching, research, and service; and fulfill the university’s strategic commitments:

Our faculty, staff, and students partner with the Muncie Community Schools to improve academic outcomes and the operational performance of MCS, while enhancing the learning experiences of our students. We actively engage with community leaders to develop and implement a coordinated plan that promotes talent retention and attraction in order to foster economic growth. The amenities and vibrancy of The Village and surrounding neighborhoods are attractive to students, faculty, staff, and community members as a result of the implementation of a long-term, phased plan to enhance quality of place. We collaborate with external partners to implement a regional plan to improve population health and wellbeing. Our community members attend and enjoy athletic, theatre, dance, music, and other arts and entertainment events at venues on campus and throughout our region. Our innovative and robust educational offerings and delivery methods—including baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate micro-credentials, short-term learning modules, professional licensure workshops, and enrichment opportunities—accelerate career fulfillment and enhance personal development and wellbeing. We recognize and reward faculty and staff who connect their scholarship with the vibrancy of the city of Muncie and East Central Indiana in ways that can be replicated in communities around the world.

OCE is thrilled to be one of the sponsors for the Writer In Residence program each year! What a great conversation with this year's visiting artist, Varian Johnson, and author (and first Writer In Residence when the program began) Ashley Ford today at the Student Center. The best part? Seeing all of the students from Northside and Southside Middle Schools and Burris Laboratory School in the audience!
If you want to learn more about Varian, his books, or you just want to hang out a super fun party, head to Ross Community Center, Inc. tonight at 5:30 p.m. for a Pizza Party with the author!

Auditions for the IPR Radio Drama are comimng up! Details below!

🗣️ Calling all voice actors! 🎭

IPR will hold auditions for our 2026 holiday radio drama from 6 to 9 p.m., Monday and Wednesday, November 9 and 11, at the IPR offices, Room 128 of the Letterman Building, on the Ball State University campus. This year's play is an original script by David Taylor Little, titled “Marva Lane and the Christmas Calamity” 🎄

The performance will take place on Thursday, Dec. 10, in front of a live audience in Sursa Performance Hall on the Ball State campus, and simulcast on IPR. Ball State PBS will record the performance for broadcast on December 24 at 8 p.m. and December 27 at noon.

AUDITION INFORMATION
- No appointment necessary; walk-ins only
- Be prepared to read with another actor or with a reader.
- Sides will be provided on-site.

REHEARSALS
Rehearsals begin after Thanksgiving and run until the Tech Rehearsal on Dec. 9; schedule forthcoming

PARKING
Parking is available in the metered lot just north of Petty Road across the street from the Robert Bell building. The entrance to Ball State Public Media’s offices is at the rear of the David Letterman building.

Forest Academy is a non-traditional educational program that embraces child-led exploration with hands-on learning that inspires creativity and a deep connection to the natural world. The program takes place at Camp Adventure on S. Proctor Road, and families are responsible for their own transportation.

MCS is now accepting requests for a spot in our PreK/K Montessori classroom -- Forest Academy -- for the 2027-28 school year. There are a limited number of openings available. Please note that all PreK students must be 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2027 and the standard $50/week fee applies. All kindergarten students must be 5 by Sept. 1, 2027.

If you're not familiar, Forest Academy is a non-traditional educational program that embraces child-led exploration with hands-on learning that inspires creativity and a deep connection to the natural world. TODAY! Author Varian Johnson's visit to Muncie kicks off today with a great campus event!

Varian Johnson, award-winning author of middle grade and young adult fiction, will be in Muncie the week of October 19th-21st to read, write, learn, and talk with students in our community schools and after-school programs, and engage with community members around books and storytelling.

Free public events on Ball State’s campus will include Varian Johnson’s Monday evening talk on writing for young people and a Wednesday afternoon fiction reading followed by an on-stage interview with Ball State alum—and New York Times bestselling memoirist—Ashley C. Ford.

TODAY: Monday, October 19th

“Writing for Young People” with Varian Johnson, 7:30 p.m. Pittenger Student Center Ballroom, Ball State University. Free and open to all. Refreshments served. No tickets required. Varian Johnson will be available to sign books after each event. After 7 p.m., free parking is available in most campus lots and garages.

*A pre-event literary fair will begin at 7 p.m. Come early and browse!

The residency is sponsored by the Creative Writing Program in the Department of English and made possible by the Efroymson Family Fund, the College of Sciences and Humanities, and the Office of the President with generous support from Burris Laboratory School, the Department of Women’s, Gender, and African American Studies, and the Office of Community Engagement at Ball State University, and our many community partners.
