A $2.7 million federal grant is bringing FORGE to Indiana! Led by Ball State’s Center for Economic and Civic Learning (CECL), the three-year initiative aims to strengthen civic education statewide.

CECL Director David J. Roof, professor of Educational Studies, is the project’s principal investigator. Teachers College faculty Michael Ndemanu, Rachel Geesa, and Jerrell Cassady will contribute as part of the interdisciplinary Ball State team.

The goal? Build the knowledge, partnerships, and resources needed to sustain high-quality civic learning in Indiana schools and communities.

It's Fun Fact Friday!

A city with great food, beautiful parks, quirky doughnut shops, and a bookstore where you could happily spend an entire afternoon? Sounds like a pretty great destination!

For Somanita Kheang, Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Studies, that place is Portland, Oregon.

Somanita loves Portland’s unique feel and how easy it is to explore the city using the MAX light rail. Her favorite stops include Voodoo Doughnut and Powell’s City of Books, where the endless shelves make it easy to lose track of time.

With so much to explore in the city and in the surrounding natural areas, Portland is a place that always offers something new to discover.

Scholar Spotlight: Meet Nora Young!

Nora Young has wanted to be a teacher since she was a child, when she would pretend to have a classroom full of students. Now, she’s making that dream a reality as an Elementary Education major at Ball State.

The Tri-Central Middle School/High School graduate hopes to teach kindergarten through third grade and has already gained experience working with young children through a daycare internship and Vacation Bible School.

Her Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship is also helping her focus on becoming the best teacher she can be without letting the financial side of college overshadow that goal.

Fun Fact Friday!

This week, we’re heading to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean!

For Andre Bean, Interim Director of Student Success for Teachers College, the Azores are his favorite place he’s ever visited.

The Azores are a group of volcanic islands with a landscape shaped by their volcanic origins.
One of the things Andre enjoyed most was experiencing the islands’ natural geothermal features, including mud ponds and pools warmed by heat beneath the Earth’s surface.

It’s a pretty remarkable reminder that sometimes the most interesting travel experiences come from the natural world itself.

She’s been around special education for as long as she can remember. Now, Lillyana Ray is putting that experience toward a future in the classroom.

With a special education teacher for a mom, Lillyana grew up helping in classrooms and seeing firsthand the difference educators can make. Those experiences helped inspire her to pursue Special Education/Deaf Education at Ball State.

Now several weeks into her first semester, she’s getting settled into college while working toward her goal of helping elementary students, with a particular interest in working with deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

Meet Lillyana, learn more about what inspired her path to special education, and find out how the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship is supporting her education.
