Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences

Students in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences have numerous opportunities to be involved beyond the classroom through participation in research, internships, annual field schools, departmental clubs, and honor societies. The department is closely aligned with the Mid-America Remote Sensing Center (MARC), a center dedicated to teaching, research, and service to the community in the areas of remote sensing and GIS. The department also provides research opportunities in conjunction with the Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site and the Murray State Archaeology Laboratory. In addition, there are opportunities for students and faculty to conduct water-related research at the Center for Excellence for Reservoir Research (WRI), located on Kentucky Lake. Students can participate in the Archaeology Club, the GeoClub, Lambda Alpha National Collegiate Honorary Society for Anthropology, or Sigma Gamma Epsilon Earth Science Honor Society.

Calling all Volunteers!

Have you ever wanted to see behind the scenes at a KY State Park? Interested in spending some quality time at Wickliffe Mounds helping with various improvement projects? Want to talk archaeology everyday? Or maybe you have wanted to help build a garden for an educational program? If any of that sounds cool to you, let us know and we can make time for you here!

Take a look at the list below of our opportunities and send me a message so we can get started.

For October, volunteer hours can fall between 9 am and 5 pm Wednesday through Sunday.

November to March volunteer hours can fall between 9 am and 5 pm Tuesday through Saturday.

If you can volunteer an hour a week, that's great. If you have more time and want to work on a project with us, that's great too. Have a special skill or interest you'd like to offer for special events or school groups, wonderful! Reach out and let's talk.
