Murray State University Shoe Tree

Murray State University Shoe Tree The Murray State Shoe Tree is an iconic and one-of-a-kind romantic tradition. Help the tradition cont There have been two Shoe Trees on campus.

The MSU Shoe Tree tradition began in the 1960s on Murray State's campus. Although the exact origins of the tree are unknown, Racer lovebirds have been participating in the tradition for decades. The story goes something like this, two people who meet and fall in love, eventually marry and then nail their shoes on the tree as a symbol of their love for one another and in memory of where they first

met. The first tree got struck by lightening, and the shoes were moved to another tree. While the second Shoe Tree flourished with each declaration of love, its condition over the years has not. Currently, MSU is in a process of moving the shoes to a new tree to help the tradition plant new roots and prosper for years to come.
