BREAKING: A new study found that microplastics and water can create a hazardous mix. ⚠️

Researchers have found that when plastic breaks up, some microplastics are generating harmful particles when exposed to water.

These molecules, called reactive oxygen species, or ROS, are known to damage tissues, posing risk to humans and animals that have ingested microplastics.

Protecting our estuary has been an ongoing struggle. The watershed plan of 2014 remains on a shelf. It is past time for Murrells Inlet to be represented when decisions are made impacting our quality of life and our estuary. Sandra Bundy for Georgetown County Council

“🚨 The 10-Million-Acre Mandate: Protection for our Land, or Just a Blueprint?”

Just a Homeowner doing research;

🌳South Carolina currently has about 3.4 million acres of protected land.
Recently, Governor Henry McMaster signed Executive Order 2024-20, creating a new statewide Conservation Commission with a high-stakes vision: protecting 10 million acres across our state by 2050.

➡️ The Executive Order Detail:
This order isn't just a suggestion—it officially directs the commission to develop a first-of-its-kind Statewide Strategic Conservation Plan.
It brings the SC Department of Natural Resources, the Department of Agriculture, and the Forestry Commission to the same table to coordinate exactly where and how our natural resources are managed.

➡️ The Homeowner’s Perspective:
Protecting 10 million acres is a vital long-term goal—but we have to ask: what happens to the land and watersheds being cleared right now?
While state agencies coordinate a plan for 2050, homeowners are watching forests and wetlands disappear in 2026 to make room for rapid developments that our current infrastructure cannot handle.

➡️ The Immediate Need:
A strategic plan is only as good as its enforcement.
We need this commission to look at the cumulative impact of current development approvals.
Conservation isn't just about large forests in the distance; it’s about protecting the specific land and creeks that are keeping our homes and roads from flooding today.

13,884 PIECES OF LITTER. ONE BIG REASON TO MAKE A CHANGE!

During our Annual Fall Haul Cleanup on September 19th, volunteers collected and recorded 13,884 pieces of debris throughout Murrells Inlet.

🚬 57% of the litter consisted of cigarette butts and plastic straws.
♻️ 84% (11,661 pieces) was made from or contained plastic.

These numbers tell an important story. While community cleanups make a tremendous difference, removing litter is only part of the solution. We need to prevent it from reaching our waterways in the first place!

💚 SO, WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT IT?

Murrells Inlet 29576 is partnering with Our Marsh Counts to revitalize our Inlet-Friendly Business Program!

This initiative will encourage local restaurants and businesses to make sustainable swaps that reduce single-use plastics and unnecessary waste. Participating businesses that meet program requirements will receive an Inlet-Friendly Business plaque recognizing their commitment to protecting our Inlet.

We're also working toward exciting improvements through grant-supported initiatives:

🚬 Cigarette Butt Receptacles: Helping participating businesses provide proper disposal options to reduce one of our most common types of litter.

🌱 Greener Community Events: Purchasing paper-based products to reduce single-use plastics at local events.

💧 Water Monster: A large-capacity water dispensing station for community events, encouraging reusable bottles instead of disposable plastic ones.

WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

Litter left on land can eventually make its way into our storm drains, creeks, and marshes, threatening the waterways that make Murrells Inlet so special.

Our goal is lasting change through education, partnerships, and practical solutions that make protecting our environment easier for everyone.

A HUGE thank-you to our Fall Haul volunteers and event partners, the South Carolina Aquarium and Our Marsh Counts, for helping make this effort possible!

Going into its third year, it is wonderful to have Our Marsh Counts project working to tackle marine debris in Murrells Inlet.

On a Sunday morning in November, Sandra Bundy spent half an hour picking up trash along the Marshwalk. She collected five plastic bottles (including Hunt’s Ketchup), seven aluminum b**r cans (all different brands), a plastic shopping bag and four pieces of styrofoam.

With the success of our Beginner Coastal Birding program for the month of October, we’re continuing this activity in November!

Register now to join us on Tuesdays in November, from 10 a.m. -11 a.m. at the Sandford D. Cox Sr. Park in Garden City for this FREE activity.

This program is designed for beginning birders to discover the birds that inhabit the salt marsh, as well as the ones that stop by for a visit during migrations.
