Maypop passion flower, Passiflora incarnata X P. cincinnata, the variety ‘Incense’ never ceases to please. This specimen at the PNPC is showing off. Drought and heat, no problem. One of the most beautiful flowers and we like this dark purple form. Each flower part has been used to represent the final moments of Christ’s crucifixion. The native has Edible fruit - and a tea is thought to soothe anxiety. SFA Gardens, Nacogdoches TX

If you’ve driven by on Starr and seen the kiwi patch you might have noticed death and destruction in the kiwifruit patch. You’re correct. Duke and crew swear they have been fighting a small herd of nutrias that have taken up residence on LaNana creek. I had assumed beavers but he swears it’s nutria. We’ve had beavers before. I haven’t seen them so this is still unverified. The only solace is that all the genetics are now saved in some off campus cooperator farms - the bad news is that critters continue to make our garden life here a challenge. Pigs, deer, rabbits, squirrels, possums, raccoons, beavers and now maybe nutria. I worked in Nepal years ago as a consultant and saw what a rogue herd of elephants can do to a banana plantation. At least we don’t have that! Gardening is not for the faint hearted. SFA Gardens Nacogdoches Texas

Almost Eden, Merryville, LA is going out of business. Jordan and Dr. Creech packed the Doolie with amazing genetics. Are 20 varieties of porterweed enough? Jordan doesn’t think so! We picked out some amazing plants, many destined for the gardens and future plant sales! After so many years, this wonderful nursery is closing its door. Saturday is the last fire sale before closing. If you’re looking for wonderful woody and perennial diversity, you should go!

There are about 2.5 million wild pigs in texas - now minus one. This is front of the Ruby Mize, a victim of a vehicle just last night. I understand a few months back a truck hit and killed ten hogs on University and totaled the truck? By the way, Jordan made me put the gray box on this image to avoid upsetting sensitive souls.
