Recruits in Class 8 of our Fire Service Technology program recently put some of their new skills and learning to the test during hands-on fire extinguisher training.

The training teaches recruits how to safely identify, select, and operate a portable fire extinguisher during the early stages of a small fire, giving them another opportunity to build skills they can use in real-world situations.

With a few weeks of training now under their belts, these recruits are continuing to build the knowledge and skills needed to respond to emergency situations and help those in their community.

Interested in turning a passion for helping others into a career? CWI’s Fire Service Technology program gives students the opportunity to build the knowledge and skills needed for the fire service through hands-on training, real-world scenarios, and problem-solving.

Three years ago, College of Western Idaho graduate, Bailey Guthrie, was just getting started in her Micron Technology Apprenticeship.

At the time, she wasn’t sure where her path would take her. The apprenticeship gave Bailey a chance to learn differently — in the classroom at CWI and on the job at Micron.

It also gave her something bigger.

“It gave me confidence, a career path, and a future I’m excited about.”

Monday, as Micron celebrated the grand opening of its new Training Center in Boise and welcomed its sixth Registered Apprenticeship cohort, Bailey shared some advice with the 27 new apprentices following in her footsteps:

“You don’t have to have everything figured out to start a future you’re proud of.”

As a proud core education partner of Micron Technology, College of Western Idaho (CWI) is helping prepare the skilled workforce needed to support Micron's $50 billion Boise expansion, which is expected to create thousands of new jobs in the region.

That partnership is already helping CWI expand opportunities for students pursuing careers in advanced manufacturing. In 2022, CWI's Advanced Mechatronics Engineering Technology program had about nine graduates. In Spring 2026, 33 students graduated from the program. Today, more than 140 students are enrolled, and new classroom space at the Micron Training Center allowing CWI to expand its capacity to enroll new students.

Micron's Registered Apprenticeship Program is another example of that partnership in action. Apprentices are hired as full-time Micron employees while completing structured, on-the-job training and technical coursework through CWI, earning while they learn and building skills for an in-demand career. Micron recently welcomed 27 apprentices into its sixth cohort, its largest Boise cohort to date.

"For nearly two decades, Micron and CWI have worked together to expand opportunity right here in Idaho, and our Registered Apprenticeship Program is a powerful example of that partnership in action. When people step into this program, they're stepping into real jobs, real pay, and a real future in semiconductors,” shared April Arnzen, Chief People Officer at Micron.

CWI is excited to work alongside Micron to connect education, industry, and opportunity right here in Idaho.

Otter pride has officially gone to the dogs. 🐾

For National Dog Day, some four-legged members of the CWI community are showing off our new Otter pet bandanas. We might be biased, but green looks good on them. 💚

Still celebrating a special day on the Nampa Campus!

Last week, College of Western Idaho officially opened the doors to the CapEd Student Success Center, a space made possible by the support of many people and partners who share in CWI's commitment to student success.

We are grateful to CapEd Credit Union for its generous investment in the center and to the Laura Moore Cunningham Foundation, whose early support helped advance the vision for a centralized space dedicated to supporting students.

The project was also made possible with funding from the State of Idaho, with support from Gov. Brad Little, the Permanent Building Fund Advisory Council, and the Idaho Legislature.

Thank you as well to the community leaders, elected officials, donors, partners, students, faculty, and staff who joined us for the celebration.

Seeing so many of the people who helped make this space possible gathered together made the grand opening especially meaningful.

Thank you for investing in CWI, believing in our students, and helping create a space that will support them for years to come.
