🎓 LCA Fall Fellowship 2026 🎓

What a wonderful evening! Students, faculty, and families gathered at the home of LCA Director Dr. Steve Ortiz and his wife Beth for food, fellowship, and exciting updates about the year ahead.

From undergraduate students to postdocs, the Lanier Center for Archaeology brings together a true community of scholars and friends—not just colleagues competing in a typical academic setting. This is what makes the LCA special.

Highlights from the evening: ✨ Two new excavations—Ashdod and Bethsaida-Julias/El-Araj—will continue in the field in 2027 ✨ The Karnak Epigraphy Project returns to Egypt in March 2027 ✨ The Neighbors & Rivals conference on the Philistines is coming, featuring keynote speaker Dr. Itzhaq Shai ✨ We honored the memory of Dr. Tom Davis, whose legacy of excellence and student mentorship continues to inspire us

🔬 Congratulations to Dr. Kent Clinger from our Chemistry & Biochemistry department! At Lipscomb University's Faculty Research Day, Dr. Clinger shared groundbreaking work on enzyme activation and inhibition. His research spans protein crystallography, gut health innovations, and potential treatments for schizophrenia. From understanding how beneficial bacteria protect our intestines to developing new drug compounds, this is the kind of transformative science happening right here at Lipscomb!

We were so honored to recently welcome Dr. Natalie Spradlin to the JS Ward Society!🌿

A Lipscomb English alumna, Dr. Spradlin is now an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine in Hematology and Oncology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center — and her journey to get there is nothing short of remarkable.

She shared how perseverance, faith, and an unexpected love for oncology shaped her calling, and reminded our students that God's fingerprints are visible all along the way — even on the winding roads.

We are so grateful for her wisdom, her story, and her heart for the next generation. 💙

We are so proud of Dr. John Smith, who presented at Lipscomb University's Faculty Research Day! 🎉

Dr. Smith shared his experience using AI as a creative partner to build Scientific Inquiry — a brand new general education course designed to help non-science majors think and engage like scientists. With no textbook or template to guide him, Dr. Smith turned to AI at every stage of development, and the results are raising exciting questions about the future of teaching and scholarship.

This is the kind of bold, innovative thinking that makes CLAS such a special place! 👏

We are so proud of Dr. Thomas Wagner, Professor and Chair of the Communication and Journalism Department, who presented his research at Lipscomb University's Faculty Research Day! 🎉

Dr. Wagner's work explores how students understand and engage with the issues they care about most — through a six-dimension framework that connects classroom theory to real-world communication skills.

This is the kind of dedicated, student-centered scholarship that makes the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences such a special place. Congratulations, Dr. Wagner! 👏

We're so proud of the incredible research coming out of Lipscomb University's College of Liberal Arts & Sciences! 🎉

At Faculty Research Day, Dr. Kyle Brawner from our Biology Department presented research that could one day help save the lives of premature infants. His work investigates how a naturally occurring compound called indole may help heal intestinal damage caused by Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) — a dangerous disease affecting newborns.

This is the kind of meaningful, life-changing scholarship happening every day at Lipscomb. Congratulations Dr. Brawner!

What an incredible season at Ashdod! 🏺 The Lanier Center for Archaeology field school team made remarkable discoveries — including exposing more of a four-chambered gate hidden beneath a six-chambered gate. Students also had the privilege of learning from zooarchaeologist Tina Greenfield, who shared her expertise in faunal analysis and what ancient diets can tell us about past civilizations.

The season wrapped up with careful documentation, architectural drawing, and stratigraphic analysis. We couldn't be more proud of everything this team accomplished!

The next Ashdod excavation season is set for June 27, 2027. We hope you'll follow along for the next adventure! 🗓️

We are thrilled to celebrate Dr. J Caleb Clanton, Distinguished University Chair in Philosophy and Humanities at Lipscomb University, on the publication of his new book, Intellectual Foundations, co-edited with Dr. Paul Begin of Pepperdine University! 🎉📖

This beautifully curated anthology gathers the greatest voices in Western history — from Homer and Aquinas to Susan B. Anthony and W.E.B. DuBois — to spark reflection on timeless questions of faith, character, civic life, and democratic citizenship.

We are so proud of Dr. Clanton and this remarkable contribution to the humanities. Congratulations! 🎓
