The Nashville Conflict Resolution Center (NCRC) held its annual Cultivating Common Ground Mediation Matters luncheon. And this year, they honored Nashville School of Law Dean William C. Koch, Jr. for his more than 30 years of distinguished judicial service, having served on the Tennessee Supreme Court and Court of Appeals.

Staff members at the NCRC say Dean Koch's lifelong commitment to justice has made him a leader in conflict resolution.

For the ninth consecutive year, the NCRC hosted this luncheon to celebrate the power of community mediation and honor the heroes who help cultivate common ground throughout our community.

Nashville School of Law students gathered to hear from alumnus Marcus Shute Jr. '14, who shared insights from his career in law, aviation, and public service.

Shute, who was appointment to the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority Board of Commissioners this summer, was the guest speaker at the monthly meeting for the NSL Chapter of Black Law Student Association (BLSA).

As the founder and managing partner of Shute Law PLLC, an adjunct law professor, a private pilot, and a dedicated community leader, Shute talked about how he built his career and what it took to get him to where he is today.

“Marcus shared the blueprint of how he has overcome barriers and has built such an esteemed legal practice. Now licensed in several different states, he is a great example of an NSL alumni,” said BLSA President Darrius Oldham '28.

Congratulations to Nashville School of Law Professor of Civil Trial Practice Dan Berexa for being named in the 2027 edition of The Best Lawyers in America for both Personal Injury Litigation – Defendants and Personal Injury Litigation – Plaintiffs.

Berexa is a member of the Cornelius & Collins LLP Executive Committee. His legal practice focuses on civil litigation, dispute avoidance, and alternative dispute resolution. He is also Rule 31 Listed General Civil Mediator.

Our Nashville School of Law Latines United for Change, Hope, and Advocacy (LUCHA at Nashville School of Law) hosted its second annual visit to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.

This year, the group grew to include students from Nashville School of Law, Vanderbilt Law School, and Belmont University College of Law, all coming together at the Davidson County Downtown Detention Center.

During the visit, law students walked through the Downtown Detention Center, learned about facility operations directly from DCSO personnel, and saw the work inside the Behavioral Care Center.

"The experience offered students a broader perspective on what happens after someone enters the criminal justice system, including the people, programs, and institutions involved throughout that process. We are very grateful to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office for continuing to welcome LUCHA and our students and for helping us make this annual experience possible," said LUCHA President and NSL 3L Ronal Bueso.

Thank you to Director Shirley Frierson and Administrator J.R. Russell with the Tennessee Legislative Internship Program for visiting with our students on the Nashville School of Law campus.

Their internship program gives students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fast-paced world of the legislature.

Along the way, students develop leadership skills, learn how the Tennessee legislative process works, and get a firsthand look at what it takes to support a legislative office.
