In certain Detroit zip codes, residents are nearly twice as likely to die of heart disease and are crushed under high rates of hypertension, diabetes and obesity. Healthy food is hard to reach and social safety nets are being pulled back. We cannot let the communities that have always carried the heaviest burden fall further behind.
Today, we’re in Detroit to launch the HEART Initiative — a five-year effort led by the Meharry Medical College School of Global Health, in partnership with Corewell Health, Loma Linda University Health and NovartisUS, community leaders, SGH students, and national partners, created to change that. Because it doesn’t have to be this way.
